hey i have a 2000 400ex and i want to do something to it to give it more punch. i heard that if you install a new cam the stock head cant take it and you have to do some customizing. Does anyone know what you have to do much much it is and can you do it yourself?

You don't have to do anything to the head, although a port & polish job never hurt anything :) . You are probalby thinking of hard-facing the rockers, which doesn't have to be done if you buy a "drop-in" cam. There are a lot of those out there that you can put in without doing any other modifications. You can getr a cam from TC racing, Sparks, GT Thunder, WB, Web, or you can buy an xr400 (from Marcum's)or the HRC copy cam (from xr's only). They all have cams that don't require hard-facing.

VegasEx`r is right. Just get a Drop-In Cam and you won`t have to do anything else. I would get a 416 or 425 Piston Kit with the Cam. Now if you are looking for Great Power, get a 39mm FCR Carb too.

I guess I should finish answering your questions. Switching cams is pretty easy. Buy a service manual (especially if you plan on changing more than the cam, be it now or down the road). The cams I mentioned all run about $160-175ish, & some require a core, while others don't. I'll second Warrior, a 416 or 425 piston is a good add-on, too. Get it with a 10.8:1 compression ratio so that you can still run on premium pump gas (any highr & you'll have to start using race fuel).

VegasEx`r, Do you have the Specs for the different Cams? I want to Call TC and ask his Specs, but I want to see how his Cam compares to the others. I would like to know the Engine Builders Specs. Thanks.

Down at the botttom of this page (http://209.120.142.52/showthread.php?threadid=7789) there are specs for the ex, xr & hrc cam. I may have more specs on my computer at work. I'll check tomorrow & let you know if I find anything.

would a 440kit with a 11:1 piston in it still be fine with a drop in cam or should i just go all out and hard face the rockers and everything?

If you are doing a 440, I wouldn't get the xr cam. I don't think it would match up well with tat size displacement. The others might work. I would look into the cams from TC, Sparks & GT Thunder.
