Sorry but the yfz is definitely NOT the best all around quad! It is not very trail friendly although its great for just about anything alse. The z400 is by far th ebest overall sport quad ever built. The can offer tons of power when opened up, have reverse, great torque, comfortable, and are pretty reliable. By the way I have a yfz, z400, and a 400ex so no Im not biased!:macho

I guess he should have qualified his question a little better. From a performance standpoint, the YFZ is the best stock quad out there.

Yes the yfz is the fastest and maybe even the best handling stock but for all around, the z hands down. Mines still a stock bore and is as fast as my stock yfz!:eek2:

How are parts scarce when there is a company that produces the machines? ATK will make them longer than Cannondale did because ATK is a larger company and fixed all the bugs, so anyone who buys one will encourage others to buy them too:D .

I would say the new predator with reverse. Great power and hadling. If I had a choice of a new quad it would be a list like this tho 450r first cause i wanna race.

2) predator
3) yfz450
5) banshee
6) z-400

every different type of riding has its best quad, here is what i think......
1. all around racing - 450r......i dont wanna here about the yfz because i raced my 450r stock against 3 stock yfz and they all lost many times
2. trails - 300ex
3. dunes - ????.....dont ride dunes
4. and now for probably the BEST ALL AROUND sport quad i would have to either go with the 400ex or the z400

I would say the 400EX and not just because i have one, but they are tried and true, easyto upgrade, very reliable, Parts are everywhere, and its a honda. The z is alright but if you abuse it the frame cracks pretty easily.

wow dude. i own a raptor now and its awesome on power, but cant turn worth a flip. i am soon to be buying a piped 400ex and i test rode it and it had the power of the raptor but it would come short on topend. i dragged a few preds in my day on my raptor. and all i can say is i cant tell you what the back of their shirt said. they arent slow but they arent THE best quad out there.

the best bang for the buck is prolly the z400 or 400ex

the best out of the box mx bike is prolly the yfz or pred(but would have to be de-sleeved to pass qualification standards)

and they best out of the box trail bike is prolly the z400 or 450r


all in all i would go with a z400 out of any of them if i was gonna do all type of terrains

I love how people who don't own a 450r are like no way you can beat a yfz. I really like my raptor and i think for all around it may be the ''best'' master of none but can do it all. I really like the 450 r think it does well all around too but i like the tourque of the raptor elect start reverse all that for trails. The 400ex is built so well geometricaly speaking that it is a blast to ride wheelys can be held for ever. I guess i like those 3 the best. The rap and r are extremly close speed wise stock trust me i know my buddy has one and they jsut get it done diffrent ways and i like both.

Well, your all going to think I`m crazy, but personally I would pick my little old `97 300ex over any quad on the trails. Its light...compact...and very reliabale. I love this machine and im glad i bought it. Got it for 1500$ and putting about 400$ into it. Cant beat it cuz ill ride her forever. Just my opinion. Thanks guys :devil:

Well being a hardcore all out honda 400ex rider i have to say my favorite one is the 400ex hands down, but being honest the baddest one of all has to be the banshee. I have tried to find a honda that is badder but the banshee is just plain out running. Yeah you got to rebuild it and the have their problems but the top ten fastest atvs that i have seen well 8 of them have been banshees.But my 400 will give one a good run for the finish line.

Biggest myth right there, if you take care of it and have everything right...it won't blow.

I love the Banshee also...mine has been good to me most of the time...except for when I haven't been good to it. The powerband is the best part about it, once you have opened up the engine with porting, pipes and carbs...hold on or your arms are ripped off!

I agree i still think the 250r is the best quad out there..... Best all around would probably be the z400 just cause its water cooled and has the potential to have a lot of power easier than a 400ex.... Raptors are just too heavy and tipsy.... 450rs and yfz450s are just so expensive....

I make fun of polaris every chance i get!! there products have been a joke for years! But that all changed in 03 with the predator! And now the updated 05 and there is no denying that it is hands down the best stock sport quad avaliable !!!!

I have felt your pain( Plante400 ) I too owned a 400 ex for 6 months bought it new and thought it was a good quad (BUT I WAS WRONG) and i admit it. It has to be the moast overrated quad ever! Until 05 it has not changed or improved since its release. Its cost is equal to the Z400 which is a far better quad , i dont mean to knock it so hard and i would give it a better rating if it it sold for $3500.00 new, because u are going to need that other $3000.00 to try and convince your self it is a sport quad STILL!

P.HUNT....i dont know how you got a trailblazer on there at all and i REALLY dont understand why there is no 250r. I have ridden every sport quad except a lt500 and yfz450. I think that the cannondale is the best fourstroke cause it hauls major *** and that the 250r os just the plain best. Out handles, out accelerates and judt plain out powers.(well mine does atleast). I will never sell this r but i plan on getting honda's updated 450r next year. And by the way....the pred is crap. Im not trying to offend anyone though...JMO.;)

ok i know everyone here is pretty pissed off.. but i got a question, i mostly ride trails here with my quad buddies but i would like to get rid of my bike and get a quad. i want something that i can ride trails most of the year, but take to the dunes every once in a while. i've been looking at a z400 which I:D think would be best, but i also thought about getting a 2000 400ex or raptor. if i got the raptor i know that i would lower it, which i don't really want to do. I also planned on putting mods into whatever i got, ie. big bore kit, pipes, jets, all that good stuff. i just wanted to know what you guys' opinions would be.

being a honda guy i would say ex...but being smart i would say z400...i think suzuki pretty much has worked all of the bugs out of it so its a decent quad, and with the way the industry has turned to high performance engines I would go with something liquid cooled. 400ex is tough as nails tho!

either one...ex might be a little cheaper but then again trying to keep it cool can cost you money too. i.e. larger oil tank, scoops, secondary cooler...but only if you choose to build a reliable race engine.

yeah thats not a bad price. I spent 3800 on my 03 EX. It had nerbars and such but that is about it. 4500 for an 04 Z is good. Don't just take what they say it costs. Tell them you've seen them around for cheaper or sumtin. Just never accept the price on the tag.

well i know that... i just was wanting to know what everyone else thought of them since i've never rode either one. i'm used to my dirtbike which i ride with my quad buddies. it makes for some interesting times trying to ride with them. one has a bad *** 88 250r the other one has an even more bad *** yfz450. i just want something that will SOMEWHAT keep up with them through the trees and ****.

In trails 400ex OWNS. Since most the time you wont be hittin 5th gear in woods anyways top end wont make a difference. With some minor mods you can accelerate pretty much as fast as a YFZ. I rode a TTr-125 and trust me 400ex is alot difference power wise. On the TTR i could do wheelies and stuff but on the EX up to 4th gear i can pull them faily easy. You wont be dissapointed with a Z or an EX I've ridden both and they are pretty close. Z is a little faster but not nearly as reliable. If you were to get a Z make sure its 04 or 05 model 03 and lower have frame problems. I personally dont like reverse just because it seems kinda stupid. I can just ride up a hill pull the clutch and roll back down to turn around. Its pretty easy to turn it around just by spinnin around. Also its fairly light so u can just lift it up and spin it around. But if u like reverse go for the Z. Personally if I had the chance to get a new quad I would go for the YFZ or the R cuz both the Z and the EX aren't going to be to competitive in the future. The YFZ and the R are lighter than the EX and the Z so more power less weight. I like my EX but I would much rather the YFZ or an R.

Get the Raptor. It gets the job done for trails and it's suppose to be pretty nice in the dunes. I've only ridden one on the ice, so I can't really tell you much there except it puts out massive amounts of torque.

If you got a Raptor, the first thing you should do is put a full HMF and a Stage 2 Hotcams in there...f'in awesome:D .

I really didn't have a problem with it being tall and skinny, I think people are overreacting about it. Whenever I made sharp turns I never had a problem with it wanting to tip over, so I don't know what everyone is talking about, but the swingarm definately needs to be a bit longer to control the wheelieing.

I rode a raptor for a couple minutes about a week after I got my EX (6-7months ago) and if you compare my 400ex to it, the raptor always feels like it wants to tip over. When you try to wheelie it, in my opinion you can't really ballance it. But that may have been my skill level playin with me cuz that was right after I started riding.

Curtis Crump ran a Raptor in Pro Production Class for a few years that i know of. And he had some pretty good finishes!

A Raptor is just like every other machine, u need to do work to make them work for u!

I agree if you lowered a raptor and put an extended swingarm, longer a arms and a wider axle you would have yourself one badass quad. Power wise the raptor doesnt really need anything, but I would put and HMF pipe on it, port and polish, Higher Comp. Piston, and a race cam in it just for fun.

I live in Vegas and we go out ridin every other weekend. There is every type of quad you guys are taking about in our group. I have a Z400 and I love my quad but I have to give props to the Raptor. Tons of torque and when uncorked is a beast. We ride for long periods of time (ex: we left at 8am and got home at 10pm last Saturday) and the Z & Rappy are always out front. As the day goes on the wait for the rest of the group gets longer. We have a Predator in our group and I have to say I am not impressed. Yeah it comes with quality parts (some with lifetime warrantees) but the ergos suck and I hate the front end geometry. The guy on the pred hit a small burm and because of the front end just launched him about 10ft in the air for about 40ft. The bike got thrashed and he was all banged up. To sum it up the design of the pred sucks and I would never own one. I'm not even impressed with the porwer, I smoke it up comp hill on my lil z400 and at the time he was piped and I wasn't.. The pred pulls real hard then the power just drops off on the top end, its the slowest when compared to the Z & Rappy. and yes we have dragged on numerous occations.


P.S. If you want to get your ***** handed to you by a 400ex go to Dumont. There's a guy with a yellow 400 spankin everyone he goes up against and that includes both 450's and Banshees.

Exactly! That is one of the hardest things to try and prove to people.

maybe its just me then. i was used to my 400 and the low, balanced feel. the raptor just felt really powerful but not low or wide enough to handle it. but ya, if ya got it lowered, wider arms and swinger it would be a nice quad.maybe some ppl like the high tippy feeling, iono

I think its kinda like the choice between YFZ450 or 450R...its impossible to choose which one is the best...its all which one you like and how much fun you have on them. Just get a quad and have a blast...if I didnt have a 400ex and got stuck with a blater or 250ex i wouldnt care...i like riding to much to care about what i ride more than the experiance!

well i just put my bike on ebay so we'll see what happens there. Hopefully i will be able to get the z400 because i think thats what i would probably like the best. I just don't think i can afford a 450r. but if i could i would have to ride them to make the decision.

You can always find good deals on barely used 450's, that's the way I would go when buying a new quad instead of having to deal with a dealership.

Z400 and 400ex you cant really go wrong! just have fun!

back to the conversation of the thread, to pitbull and phunt, yeah the 400ex is not the fastest or the best anymore, but most of these quads wouldnt have come out if honda wouldnt have come out with it! look at the competition! when it came out the only thing it had to beat was a warrior, and it blew it out of the water, it kinda revived the whole sport quad market the way i look at it, and theres no denying that, you have to appreciate that or there wouldnt be the mass amount of different quads being produced now! z/kfx is awesome just because they are pretty much a chassis copy with better shocks and engine! not tryin to take anything away from it though. but i look as it as you cant really bash the original (of this decade) reliable standby sport quad

ha but talkin bout the old quads reminded me of the bulletproof quads ive seen, yall know the ones im talkin bout, the older trx 125's, recon 250's, the old honda 300 4x4s, you know those quads who owners bash them to pieces week in and week out, half spray painted half duct taped etc any they just keep on tickin every weekend, now those are amazing peices of machinery :D

only one quad comes to mind for the top spot. the 250R... there is a reason that it is still around today, and thats b/c it is the best! i've ridden a 300ex, and 400ex, and i prefer the R over both those in every way. i'm just a 2-stroke guy though!
