I have found a good deal on a mid 90's XR 650 bike. It runs but has been horribly wrecked but all is in tact and no cracks in the engine are evident.

My question is, would it be worth swapping this engine into my 400 EX? I do mostly trail riding and hare scrambles with occasional motocross. I am totaly capable of doing the swap and fabrication needed, im just wondering if it would be worth it? What do you guys think?

It'd definately be worth it, especially for what you'll use it for. Go head and do it and don't forget to post plenty of pics!

I guess the main thing Im worrying about is 1-Weight. How much more will this engine weigh than my 400? Mainly because I love jumping and the more weight you have, the harder it is. 2-Sluggishness. I have never ridden a XR 650, but I certainly hope it doesnt run like a raptor. Anybody know what the weight difference is?

Weight difference shouldnt be much at all maybe 20#'s but thats just a guess.

I'm sure the weight won't make much of a difference, I'm guessing probably around 10 - 20 lbs too, and I wouldn't worry about sluggish power with that engine.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the weight difference. Look at the range of people riding sport quads. You got 14yr old kids weighing 140lbs, and up to adults in excess of 200lbs.

I can't imagine the weight difference being over 20lbs. Granted, any additional weight is undesirable, but it's not the end of the world. Plus, you're getting a significant power increase.

All in all, I think it would be a GREAT project.
