hey, is that a feather carbon hood? what did you use to mount it to the plastic? i'm having a hell of a time getting it to mount flush.

spliffy
01-20-2005, 02:23 PM
Yep it is.. I used some of those little metal clips with threads on them & drilled the plastic & the mounts on the hood to match & then put the screws up through the bottom.....it was kinda a ***** too.... I got the little clippy threaded things at a car store, I think they use them for moldings & stuff on cars, hope that helps ya.

Knips178
01-20-2005, 02:29 PM
i tried using those to, but it seemed like the hood was still lifted off the plastic because those clips have little lips on them that stick out. So then I though maybe using plastic push pins that look like trees would work better. but i haven't tried yet. yours looks good in the pic so I figured I'd ask.

when I got mine two of the mounts were messed up so I sent it back in under warranty and had him fix them. Cost me like $5 and he sent it back. One mount is still not quite right so I was thinking of using a hair dryer to warm up the glue and move the mounts around to fix it myself. I wanted to call feather carbon first, but now I can't find their web page. do you know it?

Yes, it is the Eddie Sanders TRX11 pipe. When I kickstart it, I have to hold my foot sideways to keep from denting or scratching it.

Alot of love has been put into this R. When I bought it about 4 years ago it was bone stock
and fairly rough condition cosmetically with about 3 different red spray paint on frame etc. etc. I tore everything down
and had frame, steering stem, headlight cage,
front and rear hubs powdercoated. Then chromed engine cases, swingarm, kick starter, brake pedal, and a-arms.
Sold rough OEM plastic and bought new OEM plastic but kept original hood and seat cover to give that stock look!
Mods include:
ESR TRX6 pipe
38 Airstyker carb
RAD valve
SANDTRIX fully MX ported/polished cylinder
ESR High Compression head (running 110)
Long rod with spacer
Entire new top and bottom end with Hinson Clutch basket
ESR exhaust flange
ESR billet shifter
DG front bumper and grab bar
AC ProPegs
Durablue Adjustable to +4 axle
OMF front race rims
Douglas .190 rear rims both with Fast Trekkers
LSR bearing carrier
Antifade lock nut
Works front triple rate shocks
Ohlins complete revalved rear shock
Front and Rear SS brake lines
Aluminum radiator shrouds and louvre
OMF front and rear skids
I know I am forgetting some stuff but I have put a lot of time and $ into the R

Are those suzuki front rims?

looks pretty close to this, GET THEM OHTSUS ROB!!!

Oh, I plan on it! I'll let these dunlops wear a little more, then I'll spring for the stock sized Ohtsus!

Are those suzuki front rims?

Mark,

Yeppers....seeing how the front and rear tires are the stock dunlops from a Z400, both with minimal wear, wheels included, I think it was a full wheel/tire combo the previous owner slapped on it. I'm not complaining. They are practically brand new, and look extremely close to the OE honda wheels. Plus, they are damn tough wheels. I am a pretty big guy, so nailing stumps and rocks on the trails here in FL can easily dent stock wheels. The R replaced my '03 KFX-400. I hit some NASTY stuff with that quad on the trail and never dented one.

My OE honda handle bars, grips, grip ends, clutch and brake levers, and shifter are on the way. The only mods I am doing are showing up from the big brown truck today :D. ESR 310 bolt on kit with associated top end parts (pipe, carb, reeds, ect). The only reason I decided to go with these parts is 1. to equal the power of my YFZ so I actually will want to ride the R, 2. to set the entire top end aside while it's still in good shape, instead of wearing it out and forcing the first re-ring/hone. I also have some IMS pegs and heel guards, but that's it....everything else is staying OE honda and being replaced by OE honda. I had to make that compromise between completely original, and FUN!

Heres my Old 88 250r

That's an amazing quad. Did you rebuild it from frame up, or just tear it down for frame repair? I really like the color on the frame!! The factory red frame just doesn't do it for me. Those plastics are amazing too! Was the bike wet or glowing in armor all when you took that photo, or were the plastics brand spankin' new? If it wasn't for the seat cover and the frame color, it'd look like that photo was taken back in '88 on your way home from the Honda dealership :D

that bike was in a trailer that burned to the ground, You dont wanna know what it looked like before! those where brand new 88 plastics, i babied them they had just had a batch in armor all. but that bike never saw dirt really accept maybe 1 time. it was a sand only bike, It hadl LSR suspension then i decided to put it back to stock and sell it. I really regret selling it And i am pissed i sent the seat to cascade to have it replaced and they kept my red seat cover even though i requested that they return it to me! I was pissed! it was an oem 88red seat cover.

and the last is a older pic, when the bike had a esr330 kit and the stock front end, the front end in the other pics is a short track kit, it allows you to turn the front wheel almost 90 degrees and its a 1.3 gallon gas tank and has a lower profile so you really can lean into turns and forward on the bike.

Deathman53,

That trike will be scary fast with that set up! I'm just now breaking in my 310 NON-PV motor and WOW! I'm pulling the front end in 4th gear at 1/2 throttle. I've done enough heat cycles now to unleash it all the way.....I cannot image how sick that would be on an ATC.

deathman53
02-09-2005, 03:16 PM
thats exactly the point, its not fast enough for me now with a stock ported cylinder, aftermarket carb, reeds, pipe, etc. I have a 330 and didn't like it, it revved slow, I am using 14/38 sprockets for it wasn't going for the full potential of the motor(as I do mx)). It was fast with the 330, but also I wanted a pv origonally and settled on a used 330(20 hours on it). The one I had wasn't ported very well and if I had it re-ported it could be alot better, but I got what I really wanted.

Slider, that 87 is killer! When did you get that 88. Where do you ride?

Thanks for the complements Freak, I bought the 87 many years ago (before powervalved cylinders) with the sole intention of installing a bigbore engine. Completely disassmbled it and refurbished what ever was needed. I waited a year after the powervalves entered the race scene and then sent the engine to LRD. It is a fun ride...

The 88 is brother to yours, purchased from Scott 3 years ago. I seen your 88 at Scott's when it was about 99% complete, I pushed him into a price on it but I couldn't justify the 9500 price at that time. I still can't believe he sold it, that is one sweet machine.

I don't ride as much as I used to but have went to the U P the last few years for a couple weeks. I used to go to Silver Lake a lot when the restrictions were much less but any decent riding is several hours away to the north.

Wow 9500!! I guess he diddnt want to let it go at the time. I'm the second owner since Scott. The guy I bought it from let it sit for 2 years, it was his "museum piece". I found it by chance and paid dearly for it, though a far cry from 9500. Its a shame Scott diddnt put a stock seat on mine, thats the only gripe about mine.

I'm sure you cought the thread from yzf Rob and his "bone stock" 88R, which happens to be related to ours. I know there is at least one more R out there from Scott, he may not have sold it yet. Pretty cool knowing they all have good homes.

My family has a place in Harrison, we ride Leota and St. Helen.
I've never been to Silver lk. Would like to go at least once to see what its all about, but dont like the idea of the voucher system.
Also my girlfriends family has a place in the U.P., Detour. The trails in that area are fun, Drummond Is. would be a real blast for a ute. Not much fun on sport quads, alot of mud holes when we were there.

And here's some new photos of the 3rd 88 from Scott. It's come a long way since I bought it. What's the deal with Scott?? Does he buy and sell mint 88Rs? I had a strange story with mine. I had a signed title from someone else 3 months before I bought it. It was signed over from a woman that put the selling price at $100.00. He had some story about how he sold it to her, but she couldn't pay him so she sold it back, and listed it at $100, so he wouldn't have to pay a lot in taxes. Well, I hope that's a valid story and he didn't just find it at some widows house and offered her $100 for it. He rigged it up with about a gallon of armor-all and did some ghetto clean ups like paiting the stock exhaust, flywheel cover, and front sproket guard. The bike needed new pegs, a complete rebuild of the rear suspension linkage and swing arm pivot, some minor de-rusting of the frame on the bottom, new chain and sprockets, new handlebars, grips, and some other minor stuff. That stuff plus not having the original piston like he said it did, are the only complaints. It's a great quad. Brakes are all in perfect condition and original, so was the chain and rear sprockets, so you could tell it wasn't riding THAT much for being 17 years old.

Looks good Rob, I don't remember if you bought direct from Scott or not. From what your quad needed in repairs it can't be the one I'm thinking it was, he may still have the one I seen. I think he bought up a fair number of R's when the prices were down and stored them away to clean up and resell. I've seen him advertise on the Trader with all years models for a couple years before I got mine from him. Mine needed some work too but it was all stock and that's what I wanted. Mine originally was bought new in Indiana, I have all the paper work from the original owner. The engine was clean inside and even the clutch plates still were good, needed new springs though.

He had 2 89's I seen also when I was there that were very nice but I'd wanted an 88 for quite some time and went with that.

Freak

The stock red seat isn't available anymore, your seat was a custom build, is the rear warning label on your seat cover coming loose? That wasn't stuck very well I remember if yours is the quad I seen in Scott's basement.

It is good to know these quads are being taken care of and not trashed, they're becoming more rare all the time. There just is no replacement for the original even with all the new stuff out now. The last time I went to Silver Lake I rode the 88 and the looks and appreciation from some people are quite rewarding. If you go in April or after Labor Day they don't use the vouchers as far as I know. You should make the trip, it's a fun place to play in the sand. I've rode a lot west of Houghton Lake and a group has been going to the U P for a week over the 4th of July and again at Labor Day for the last few years. I love the riding up there and lack of trail traffic.

The warning label on the back isnt peeling but the silk screened
Fourtrax logos on the sides are flaking from use. It still looks ok, but it isnt going to get better. I have a replacement seat that needs a OMF seat latch. The bozo I got it from diddnt tell me before I bought it that he cut the studs off the pan. Maybe I'll try a gripper cover.

I got in touch with scott just after getting my 88 and he said he had another 88 that was just as complete as mine but not as nice for less than I paid. He kinda cringed when I told him I was trail riding that Quad.

Mine is a 9 out of 10, even the stock skid plates are like new. My frame was powder coated and all decals are correct. He did do a good job with the resto. No hill billy stuff done to it. I've probibaly used 6 tanks of gas since having it, and its tight. I'd like to shelf this motor and find a good P/V motor for the woods.

Yeah, still running the suzuki wheels it came with. Since they look pretty close to the stock 88/89 250R wheels, I don't mind them....again, just a few of those odd ball things that weren't right, but nothing to make me upset about.

I did exactly as you mentioned, just with the top-end though. The stock top end is in good shape, and definitely unported. I just set this aside in a box and stepped up to the 310 so that it can hang with the YFZ. No point in owning a quad that you cannot fully enjoy, even if you only want to ride it a dozen or so times a year.

Powerslider,

I did buy directly from Scott. At the time, he was only advertising mine and 2strokeFreak's. He claimed he sat on mine for 6 years. I suppose you could say the things that needed replacing were all normal wear and tear items. I suppose he had a good idea by getting them when they were cheap and selling them high. They aren't as hot as they used to be though with more impressive 4 strokes coming out. Up until the YFZ and 450R was released, and up until they were banned from most race classes, they really peaked in value.

Woah, I Diddnt buy from Scott. I'm the second owner since Scott.
I've had mine just about a year now, and the guy I bought from had it at least 2 years. So there is another one around.

Does ESR offer a spark arrestor?

Ah, well he had another 88R that looked just like yours. I don't think it had any restoration done to it, but had a pipe and a couple other parts on it. This was back in January, so definitely not yours, especially since you bought yours from someone else. Man this guy has a lot of 250Rs!
