ride height

I am setting up my 400ex for xc racing , just installed a new set of elkas on the front , and was needing advice on ride height .what is a good height ? and do I need to measure the height while on the Quad or off ?

The advice I got from a knowledgable builder is that 8 inches is a good ride height for a novice rider measured with the rider on the atv. Measure the rear height under the frame right below the footpegs. The front should be about 1/4 inch higher measured under the frame about where the rear a-arm mount is located.

I was told that a faster smoother rider can benefit from a lower ride height than 8 inches but handling will be better for a novice at about 8 inches because it covers up alot of mistakes with the increased height.
