Ok I have a question for anyone running the crf 450 cam chain. I got mine in today and realized that it is wider than the stock chain. WIll this be okay to run even though it could have a little side to side play? It will remain tight on the sprockets, so I'm not concerned with it jumping the sprockets. BUT will it be okay with that little side play? Anyone running this setup had any problems with it? Thanks guys.

it shouldn't necessarily have any more side play than stock. yes, it is one plate wider exactly like the $100 aftermarket timing chain for the ex. you will be fine.

Well it is one plate wider therefore it has the ability to move side to side on the sprocket, the chain doesn't have slop or anything I was just wondering if it was ok to run it like that. Thanks

yes, it may move a tad bit. there really shouldn't be any play in it though. i have a feeling your just fine. remember to put the timing chain tensioner back in.

Yeah Ill definitely remember to put that back in. Anyone ever heard of one of those going bad, I saw pics today in dirt rider on a crf that the tensioner went bad in, and boy was that piston nasty looking. The cam missed timing cause it got so loose and the valves messed the piston up real good, and bent the valves.

i do see those going bad here and there. however, i never had a problem with mine. just make sure when you retract it back with a small screwdriver it doesn't want to stick at all.

oh yeah how tight do you run the cam tensioner? just tense or pretty tight or any specific torque amount.

the 400ex timing chain tensioner is self adjusting. you retract the tensioner and then put it on the bike and tighten down the two 8mm bolts. then quickly pull the small flat blade screwdriver out of the tensioner. it is then set.
