My friend has a 99ex whith these mods- FMF pipe, K&N w/o lid, hotcam stage 2, 39mm FCR, Sparks clutch and timing key.

He is thinking of a 440 kit, but he dont know if it will be worth it. If he still wont be able to run with the 450's it wont be worth it to him.

If it will get him close what brand do you rec? Also is there a problem with overheating? We mainly ride sand dunes, but we give them plenty of breaks.

Thanks.

depending on his weight get the 416 .. it revs quicker .. its more reliable and easier to build.
It will hang with stock 450s .. add a pipe to the 450 and that will quickly change.

I was at the Dunes, a 400ex with a 426 kit, port, carb and other mods tore me up... he did have about 3000 bucks worth of mods though. You may have to worry about pulling the head bolts out, some guys have that problem.
I would say he would have more worries than anything, jmo. Z.

What were you riding?

My friend was thinking of geting something like a 440 weisco piston and sleeve.

Would a 416 or 426 be better than the 440?

For the sand I would deffinatly go with the 440 its the king of torque! For woods racing Some say a 426 would be better but I dunno I love my my 440 in the woods. Also im about even with a 450.

I know this is probably about a 400ex and yes i love honda and that is what i will always ride but the z400 is just as fast if not faster than a bone stock 400ex and in the October 2003 edition of Dirt Wheels they did i drag between a z440 with 2 grand in engine alone and a yfz450 with nothing done to it but the baffle taken out. The yfz was consitently ahead of it by a bike length or so. And I am probably going to get hated on for using this example but im just saying that it takes a lot of money to make a 400ex run with the stock 450s.

This is true, good example.
But he has almost evrything except the big bore and porting.

Thanks for the replies, he is going to get a 440. Not sure what one to get yet.

I rode a stock YFZ with baffle out and airbox lid removed and TRX with airbox lid on and HMF pipe.

The YFZ felt a LOT stronger, but twitchy as hell and the suspension sucked. Very strong motor that pulled harder up top than my 416 or the trx450.

The TRX didn't feel any stronger than my 416. Actually I think my 416 has more useful power than the piped TRX had.. Dyno runs might show something different but I was not impressed with the TRX at all.

Would I sell my quad to buy either quad above??? Nope Useful power in the riding and racing you do is what counts. IF your a drag racer, sell your 400ex and get a banshee or YFZ. I've passed and been passed by several YFZ and TRX quads. Long straight aways the YFZ would get ahead of me but NOT walk all over me like I was sitting still.

So my conclusion is the YFZ is very fast, but not as reliable as a Honda. LOL

Lots and Lots of Pro's are on Honda's this year over last years line up, in both GNC and GNCC Racing. That says a lot right there. Nothing against Suzuki either. Their motors can be built strong too..

hey rico, did the yfz u rode have offset or flipped wheels. cause my buddies has 2+3 offsets w/ holeshot fronts and it was kind of twitchy in braking bumps and stuff like that. i was just wondering if the toe-in is wrong the these bikes. i bet giving it a little more would help this a lot. what u think.

i know everyone wears this out but the rider makes such a hugh difference, whether it be draggin, climbing, jumping, etc. for example, i holeshotted against 3 yfz's and a kfx at the murray arenacross, and i was one of the only ones to jump everything in my class, with most having LT!!! i get so disgusted seeing these $15000 bikes at races rolling everything!!!! BAAAH

400 is a good bike for a chick. Where I ride, raptors, yfz,s, the suzukis and ex,s cant touch my bike through the rough or on top speeds, and I weigh 255.
