I have a 02 400ex and I mostly ride trails. I was going to get a new front and rear sprocket. But what should I get? I was thinking maybe a 14 tooth front and 36 tooth rear. Please give me some suggestions.

by doing that it will give you barely and i mean barely more top end. kind of contradicts itself. drop in front is more bottom end. drop in rear is more top end. 3 rear teeth =1 front tooth. i ride trails and i went to a 14 and kept the 38 rear.

actually, i think you will gain a tad bit more low end power. for every 1 tooth changed on the front, a 2.5 tooth change on the rear is the same.

what kind of riding you looking to do? are you more concerned with top end or low end?

I ran the 14T front and 38T rear, and got beat in a drag race by a piped 300ex!!!!!!! Don't do it! It makes you slower, even though it feels quicker. And you are always shifting.
I ride with a friend with a Raptor, and got tired of it eating me up in open areas, and went to a 15T front (Stock) and 36T rear.........Wow. Top speed was awesome! Less frequent shifting, but less able to lug along at low speeds.

Now, I run 15/38 stock gearing, and keep a 36T sprocket on the shelf for those occaisional fireroad rides...........Or times that someone needs passed. When my 426 is built, it may stay on there all the time if my torque numbers are good enough.

If I did keep the stock 15t front and get a 36t rear you said it would help with top end but will it take away much from the low end, and would it be good for trail riding or should I just keep the stock gearing?

for trail riding, stay stock or go lower. for drag racing in the upper gears, stay stock or go higher.

I trail ride mostly, and I love my 14t. I love being able to pop a wheelie in 4th without using the clutch, and it is great for logs, hills, etc.

I run 14/38 for XC racing. Works great for me with 20x11x9 Razr2's on the rear.

I ride trails and I run a 14/39. The reason I say that is you get the benefit of a little more torque by running the 14T but it don't totally kill the top end by running the 39T

if you are not really worried about top end, i'd say go 13t front. gives you quite a bit more bottom end. i love my 13t.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about a 400EX. The gear ratios on your bike are totally different. 13T would be way too low for any 400ex, unless you were pulling up stumps! BTW, I run 14-34 sprockets on my 4?? !
