I just received my 450R service manual and I was reading over the process to remove the cam holder for the valve adjustment. Im curious to know if I need to purchase the cam chain tensioner holder tool or is there an alternative? I was going to adjust my valves this weekend but if this thing is mandatory then its gonna set me back.

the 450r has shims, you cannot adjust them like a 4hundy. Z

just take and put zip ties on the cam chain threw the gear then take the bolt out of the end of the tensioner and insert a flat screwdriver and turn it to loosen it

The cam chain tensioner is spring wound so as soon as you let go of the "screwdriver" the spring will unwind. Its no big deal except that you will have to hold it in place during reassembly to get the two bolts ran all the way in before letting go. With the tool its a little bit easier but not essential.

By the way I hope you know what size shims you'll need otherwise you will be waiting on the shims to come in and your quad will be in pieces. Hope this helps.

Use the small screwdriver method, but use visegripes on the handle of the screwdriver to keep it from unwinding

I also use the screwdrive method. If you want a holderyou can make one. All you have to do is cut one out of really thin sheet metal, if I had a scanner I'd show you a pic of one. If you have a clymers book they show pics of them, thats where i saw it.

A little trick that we learned on the 400ex adjuster also works on the 450- after you wind the adjuster in, just turn like trying to tighten a screw and it will lock in the" in" position. When ready to release, just turn counter clockwise and it will unwind quickly! saves a bunch of time!
