Quad races are a big part of "Motocross Sunday's" at Woodland Motocross Park in Woodland, WA. The Sunday Event usually attracts an average of 60-70 quad racers, which is considered a good turn out for a local race in the Pacific Northwest.

From 8:00am – 11:30am is the kid’s time to race. The kid’s classes have just as healthy of a turn out as the adult’s classes. Every season there are more and more kids racing, which to me, points to a very promising future for the sport as a whole.
This is the 80cc-90cc Amateur Class on the starting line.

And they’re off…

The adult practice laps start at noon. There is usually 2 ½ - 3 rows of quads on the line for practice.

Just before Christmas, Kory Ellis was in Washington State, visiting his hometown of Longview. While in town, Kory came out to race at Woodland MX Park, where he says it all started for him.
Kory didn’t waste any time getting off the line to practice

Kory was amazingly fast even during practice. My camera even had a hard time keeping up with him on some of the high-speed sections of the track.

Here's Ellis during practice, making it look easy.

There were many racers that had found out Kory would be racing at Woodland. Some traveled over four hours just to have a chance to see how they would stack up against a National Pro. Unfortunately, #18 never got his chance, after breaking his axle during practice.

Washington State is notorious for the amount of rainfall it receives which can just about turn the event into a mud bogging contest rather than an MX race. Amazingly, the weather was cooperative for the most part; which means there were no torrential downpours that are all too common for December. There were a few sprinkles throughout the day, but that didn’t stop Kory and the other “Open Class” riders from getting enough traction to come screaming off the starting gate

Ellis did not get 1st in the hole shot.

Raptorchick
01-06-2005, 03:53 PM
Nicholas Delagrange, #8, took first in the “Open Class” hole shot, with Jesse Goss, #2, taking second, but Ellis was right on Goss’ heels.

Raptorchick

Just into the first corner, Ellis was already set to make his move and pass leader, Delagrange. A couple of weeks prior, Delagrange managed to hold off Ellis for three laps, before Ellis got by him.

Raptorchick
01-06-2005, 03:55 PM
By the third corner, Ellis was far ahead of even the fastest local pros.

Here’s Ellis catching a little air...

Raptorchick
01-06-2005, 03:56 PM
During that moto, Ellis came into a corner a little too hot, sliding to the outside of the track and almost sliding off the side of this jump in the process.

Raptorchick

Luckily Ellis saved it.

While Ellis was busy showing everyone how fast he is, There was plenty of action going on amidst the rest of the pack.

This is another shot of some of the “Open Class” riders who were racing against Kory.

These guys were really close through the entire moto.

During down time I had to check out some of the sweet looking quads that were there. This was one of my favorites.

Here are a few more that caught my eye…

Of course I had to go over to Kory’s pit area and see what new goodies he had on his quad. This quad is Kory’s “test” quad. Any new parts that come from his sponsors are tested on this quad first, then, if they pass the test, are used on Kory’s race quad.

On a side note, Ellis is using a stock ‘05 swing arm. He said that Yamaha beefed up the ’05 swinger by making the walls a bit thicker. Kory said that so far it has held up to his abuse with no problems, unlike the ’04 swinger that has thinner walls and has a tendency to crack.

While hanging out in the pit area, I got a chance to talk with Kory about his sponsorship through Yamaha, and he is pleased that Yamaha is stepping up and supporting racers. Kory believes that manufacturer involvement will definitely generate more attention for the sport.

Kory also thinks that promoting the right image will draw in younger participants and fans, which is desperately needed to propel quad racing to the same level as dirt bikes.

In between motos, Ellis did his best to promote that positive image, and was kept busy signing autographs, and talking to fans and fellow racers. Kory and his crew even brought posters along to hand out to the children.
Here’s Kory with young fans, Mariah, Jamie, and Nicole.

Kory said that Woodland MX Park is the first track that he ever raced at, and worked on building his skills there for nine years. Ellis agrees that Woodland is a great track for beginners. Every season the track sees many new racers. These are some of the racers in the 4-stroke Amateur Division 1 Class.

This is #4 Westley Richards, who took 1st place in the 4-stroke Amateur Division 1 Class.

#19, Reed Petchnick (pictured below) is a 13-year-old racer that went up against Ellis in the Open Class. Reed is a recent graduate of a racing course that Kory conducted this past summer in Washington State. Reed placed 5th overall in the Open Class and 2nd in the 4-stroke Amateur Division 2 Class.

These two 40+ Vet Class racers were battling back and forth for 1st place through their entire moto. #3 eventually took the win, with #17 coming in a close 2nd.

That would be sweet to get to race against a pro at your local track! Nice coverage. Why did Ellis DNF though?

Raptorchick

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Kory said his quad wasn't running right while he was there, and that's why he DNF'd.

I'm pretty sure those are Epic Suspension A arms. I think Ellis and Jeremy Schell are both running them.

Great coverage Lisa......... Reed also won the Blaster Expert class in the morning, and 2-stroke Am (on his Blaster), in the afternoon. He rode a total of 4 classes that day, and was ready to ride more, when it was over. Reed was soooooo excited that Kory was there, and really excited, that he got to race against one of his hero's.

Did anyone notice that the guy that broke his axle in the one pic was using a DURABLUE?? Big surprise there... The snapped piece of his axle is caught in the picture with the durablue sticker exposed... What garbage those axles are, Ill never run one...

Yeah, I think there was another post on that, but they did it a little more discretely.....

I think Alba, Epic and Precision Concepts have been working alot lately and Epic and Precision handled the work on Alba's Baja Series and BITD series champions they moved toward the MX arena first working with Jeremy and now it appears with Kory as well.
