Panasonic AJ-HDC27F, doesn't get any better than this, unless you go with an Imax film camera.

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=68646&catGroupId=14569&modelNo=AJ-HDC27F&surfModel=AJ-HDC27F

...Yeah, go with the DVX100A, but not from Royalcamera, that place will take your money, but you'll never see the camera for that price.

Here's an awesome site with tons of info on the DVX.

I want something small and mobile...the pana and cannon seem to be the best for my application.

You should be happy with either of the Panasonics. The DVX is better than the DVC, but I have the DVC, and I've been very happy with it.

There are rumors that the Canon GL2 is going to be replaced very, very soon, like today soon or within the next 2-3 months soon. So you should be able to get it for real cheap, but if it were me, I'd wait and see what improvments they make to the newer version.

The Sony VX2100 is also another camera to look at.

I really don't reccommend buying it from Royalcamera, I've heard some bad stories about them.

get yourself a nice xl2, variable film speeds and frame modes make anything possible with this thing.

I just got a Canon 20D and it is definitely a solid camera. Good choice if you are looking for a camera that can keep pace with ATV races.

Honestly, the Panasonic DVX100a and the Cannon XL2 are the best mini DV cams on the market.......DVX for its great piture quality and 24P, and the XL2 for its Innerchangable lens and 24p.......We currently own both, and id say the Cannon is the hardest getting used to, but very useful when mastered!

DVX - $3,499
XL2 - $4,999

Very good comparison/review of the DVX, the XL2, and Sony's new HDV cam the FX1.

Look into Phase One. We got a H25 at work. Their new P series are supposed to be sweet too... It's just the back though, you still got to get the camera...
or are you talkin video?
