View Full Version : What runs your community??

Well I don't think this kind of question has ever been asked ( I was too lazy to search and check sorry ) ... but I got the idea of asking after reading a book that I got for x-mas .

It's mostly about the evolution of the fast food industry and how many large factories and processing plants have become the heart of many cities and small communities .

So what type of industries run your communities?? Here in Sudbury,Ontario,Canada we are a mining community . Mostly run by the mining giant INCO , it at one time employed over 25 000 people , but has now been cut down to about 3500 full time employees and all the others employees work for contractors . Theres is also another large mining company called Falconbridge which employes about the same number of people .

If you live here in Sudbury , it's mainly because your family is employed with the mines or you work with companies that supply products to the mines . Theres nothing here except for rock .

Here's what you stare at , if you live in Sudbury . Isn't she pretty ?? Largest free standing smoke stack in the world . Nearly 2000 feet high . We send our pollution to other communities . Many of our lakes were killed in the early 40's due to Acid rain ( which we still get) , but things are now on the mend . The pollution that comes out of the stack is incredible... sulphur dioxide , carbon monoxide , etc . It's all the crap pollution that is caused during the smelting of the ore .

Whats the point in being the world's largest Nickel producer , if you don't have the world's largest nickel right?? We took care of that problem .

Here's a bit of how Sudbury came about ...

"With a history that literally started off with a big bang, it's no surprise that this northeastern city has become a thriving urban centre that holds the title of largest city in northwestern Ontario.

Sudbury's history dates back nearly two billion years ago. A meteorite, measuring 10 to 20 km (6 to 12 mi) in diameter, collided into the planet in the section of earth that would eventually become Sudbury, causing the earth's crust to crack. In addition to carving out a kidney-shaped hole 20 km (12 mi) deep, the meteorite left behind exceptional amounts of nickel, copper and platinum. " taken from http://canada.worldweb.com/FeaturesReviews/TownCityReviews/8-797.html

Mostly milk here but now we are getting casinos built by the indian reserves and the place is really starting to boom especially with the orthodox jews that live here. But its mostly farms here mostly having to do with milk and meat. A lot of people are becoming interested in the area and in fact, our neighboring town is being featured on TLC's new show called town haul similar to trading spaces. I know thats kinda off topic but it airs on January 22nd on TLC.. I just thought that was kind of interesting and they did a great job!

Oh we also have the Sudbury Nutrino Observatory (SNO) which is 6800 feet below the surface . Scientist from all over the world come here to do experiments and research to figure out how the Universe was created . They study nutrinos ( invisible things form the sun) that pass through the earth , but become detected when they pass through heavy water . They say that one day , they'll ahve the answer to how the Universe was created  . This place is ultra clean though ... you have to go through a series of wash downs , and other things before entering . Any small particle of dirt or dust can screw up the whole thing .

When the guys were mining to be able to build this thing , they were working on 30 minute shifts . Go down the shaft , mine for 30 minutes and coem to the surface for an hour . Extremely hot temperatures at 6800 feet below the surface . I've had the chance to go down to a 4000 foot level and I was sweating like crazy just walking .... gotta be tough to hold a 75 lbs jackleg ( huge drill) for an 8-12 hour shift .

Here's some info about SNO , for any of you science nuts out there . http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/

We still have a GM plant, a steel mill and a ppg glass plant in the area. But they dont employ near as many as they used too. There are a couple of state prisons in Mansfield too.

There are still quite a few factories around, But not like there used to be. Westinghouse and Tappan used to have there headquarters in Mansfield 5 miles away. At one time they imployed 10,000 people here. Then it closed in 1990.

Gm has to be the biggest employer left followed by the hospital.

Our communtity and the ones around us are supported mainly by the lumber industry, ranching, some mining and tourism. I live about an hour away from Gang ranch, at one point it was the largest Ranch in the world. Now it's the third largest. But mostly the lumber industry keeps us going.

well we have a schwanns depot here, lots of automotive industry factories, (small) we make stamped parts, felder flares, pc parts black, fuel lines, wire harnesses, injection mold. have a tool and die facility that makes hobbs that are carbide that cut the gears for briggs and stratton engines. we have 3 gypsum quarrys, thats the main mining we have, drywall and mud is made and shipped from our town. theres gypsum in toothpaste ya know. and we have a shipping port for the rock. the rock slides down a big tube under the road then big buckets on cables carry it out to the 1,000' foot barges. but the whole system had to be upgraded so it was cheaper to just close it down. im in the propane industry so i like texas and canada cause thats where most of it comes from.

Locally we have Mercury Marine and Mercury High Performance (boat engines) and of a city of 40,000 people that is alot of the employment in the area, but we also have Giddings and Lewis another manufacturing company, and many smaller manufactures. Where i live is just off of a lake, Fond du Lac is french for foot of the lake, or something like that. i think Lake Winnebago is one of the bigger freshwater lakes in the US, and its on any map. Also Fond du Lac is a railroad area, ran by the CN. Also there is A lot of agriculture, in which my family is highly envolved in, but the city is slowly working its way out into the countryside, so construction is pretty big here too...

Nothing runs our community besides donations from the local cosino, yes we have one out here in the middle of no-where, well its about 40 miles away...:ermm: We have a lumber mill that about 75% of the community works at, so that is a big deal, and logging is a major income too. Our school is down to 4 day weeks now, and the buget needs to be cut even more, we do not live in a very wealthy community....

The city I live near used to be an industrial empire. Fasteners, automotive suppliers, hardware. A lot of them have picked up and left town for other areas. We still have a Chrysler Plant nearby (the evil empire... can't even get a job application unless you're referred), and there's two major U.S. Government contractors here. Most of the jobs have gone from being high-paying skilled labor (CNC Machining, Headers, Roll Threaders, etc) to a "Wal-Mart" standard. It's really actually pretty sad. I'm pretty lucky because I work in pharmaceutical packaging, and that seems to be fairly secure so far.

Dalton, GA. Carpet capital of the world. Many many carpet mills and subsidiaries. Anyone can get a job here (or used to could before the population expansion) sometimes if not many times without a high school diploma starting at $10 hr, $14-16 hr after 5 yrs, some corporate guys make well into the $120-200K. Due to the abilility to find work with no school or citizenship with good pay we are now being well overrun by illegal aliens. As a matter of fact there are now 20,000 illegal and legal aliens alone in Dalton where 15 years ago, the population wasnt but 10,000 total. Total population for the small city is now 27,000 total. Is there something wrong with this picture? Now we are starting to have gang problems, big time drug problems and crime has uproared even though the police force has quadrupled in the last 10 years. This small sleepy community is now starting to feel like Los Angeles, but you can drive 30 miles and have nothing but nice mountains and riding areas.

Well...damn wal-marts took over, Giant food stores and a mini mall pretty much is our food supply, losts of fast food, and the one i HATE Devopments (sp) theres so many around here now, it started with a couple farmers in the next town getting greedy, now all of them are greedy. it sucks so much im highly considering burning some of the new houses down to show they arent welcome lol, lil crazy but god damn i hate them takin all the riding spots away! and who wants to see 150 houses all bunched togather?

also trucking is big around here, car dealerships, autobody, diesel mechanics and automobile mechanics, and my favoirte dirtbike/atv shops :D and mushroom growers! this is the mushroom capital of the world, its pretty cool, makes TONS of money, my older brother married my dads boss's daugter, so I get to have a job up there with my dad doing mainly diesel mechanics, metal work and computers, just to give you an idea of how big mushroom growing is, they are doing a 7 millon dollar additon to the plant, my dads the head of everything that goes on etc, its awesome..

thats pretty much what runs the down, well what all of us use etc. theres tons of jobs etc, i guess you could say my area's pretty nice, chester county was rated the largest growing county in the us by some magazine, i could careless cause we have all these dipchits from the city coming..

I was giving a rough figure ... but it's 1550 feet . LOL . The picture doesn't really do it justice . The base of it , is about 300 feet round . And the opening at the top is about 50 feet round . It's called the Super Stack .

"The Inco Superstack is the world's tallest chimney. It was constructed by Inco Limited in 1972 at an estimated cost of 25 million dollars. The Superstack sits atop the largest nickel smelting operation in the world at Inco's "Copper Cliff" processing facility in the city of Greater Sudbury. "

We have a gm plant where the trucks are made, and a couple really big stell mills. There is also a goodyear plant where a ton of people work. Also, the city of Fort Wayne is one of the most obese cities in the U.S. Thats not a good thing to be known for. There are also a lot of cabinet companies in the area. Plus you cant go to a house being built and not see an amish peron working there. A couple towns around here even have tourists because of all the amish, and the stuff they make.

Another thriving business out of town is these people that have massive vans and drive amish people around. I call them amish carriers, and you see them everywhere. The amish here definately are starting to come into technology. Its not rare to see them on their cell phone and a cigarrette in one hand while going down the road in their buggy. Or you will see kids driving around in bobcats. The weirdest thing i saw was two kids about 14 or 15 going down the road in their buggy, yelling and laughing, and clearly drunk. You could see the beer bottles in their hands.

My city is not very well known or important. But supposedly they might build a new six flags about 10- 15 minutes from my house. It use to take 9 minutes to drive to school. It now takes 15 or 16 because of traffic and lights. There was absolutely nothing by my house, but now people are building huge houses and stores everywhere. Where there was once some woods, there is now a walmart, meijer, bob evans, bw3's, applebees, steak and shake, menards, game store, wendys, subway, golden corral, and unos. They were all built within the last few years. Also a lot of housing has been put up right there. The good thing is that it shouldnt come out any close to my house because the amish own a lot of the land, and they never sell it.

I think Polaris runs the community where I go to school, which sucks...Other than that, it's a casting company called Bealka.

Agriculture is big around here but tourism is pushing everything out:ermm: We do have a large go cart retailer/warehouse in our town, its called MRP racing largest distrutor of sum type of go cart frame. They race all over the world i guess. Most people travel out of the area to work in the bigger cities.

we have the big ol' nuclear power plant. Its crazy tho, i like in perry, but in north perry(part of perry right across rt. 20) they get all kinds of free stuff. They get free garbage pick up, DIGITAL CABLE, utilities, and they get a sweet deal on cable internet. all of this just for living by the nuclear plant. But because of the nuke plant, we have a sweet school system(well as sweet as a school can be...)

Close to there. I actually reside in Machesney Park ('bout 15 mins north of Rockford, 15 mins. south of Beloit)

I live 25 mins from Machesney, I live in Darien WI. Where do you ride?

Mostly I ride at the easement behind my house. I've also got the notorious Perryville Road extension to ride on (not at the moment, too much snow). I like to go to Fox Valley Offroad, they have some gnarly trails (for my skill level anyhow!); Riding areas are becoming harder and harder to find. E-mail me sometime if you've got a group ride or something going on.

PUBLIC AID!!!!!!!!, (j/k) I would have to say industry, But even that is going downhill FAST. About the only thing our town has going for us is really the RxR. For better jobs, alot of people from our town/area, drive to St. Louis. Oh yeah we do a bit of framing as well.

My dad runs our community, haha!...he's the Mayor!:)

Seriously, the town is basically a farm community, but most the people here work in Wichita, which is about 25 miles north of here. Wichita, KS. is the "Air Capital of the World," so there are all kinds of airplane manufacturing companies ; Boing, Learjet, Raytheon, etc.

Home of the worst tornado in Kansas!:)

I forgot to mention that Meth runs our community. Here in Polk County we are the second biggest producers of Methamphetamines. I can't wait until I'm able to move away from that horrible stuff...you can drive by houses and pick out the Meth labs, and whenever you see people you can tell which ones are on it. It's really a horrible thing, I've experienced it within my family (older brother) and I just don't understand why people do drugs, let alone that kind of drug.
