I got my motor out of the frame ready to get set out for my 416 kit. But it looks really grungy dirty. I was wondering what everone does with theirs...........Is there a good way to make them look good again?:ermm:

I've wondered the same thing for a long time. Everything else on my quad looks good except the motor. I know the side cases can be PCed, but my cylinder looks horrible and is like yellowish.

Some Citrus degreaser and a tooth brush works wonders. It pretty much won't hurt anything. You can get the citrus stuff at any car parts store.

i use engine degreaser from walmart ($0.78 a big can) and steel wool

10 bottles engine degreaser = 1 bottle oven cleaner

use that crap sparingly

I've used Simple Green and the Castrol Degreaser with still no results. I think it's pretty much stained, and would need sanded or blasted.

Keep us posted, I hope there is an easier way........Air cooled motors are soooo tough to keep clean!:ermm:

you could just clean it up and paint it. it's alot easier to keep clean

What kind of paint do you use? I have thought about using high temp engine paint..

for the base you don't need high temp. the bottom end doesn't get very hot. For the red one it was just normal spray paint. and for the yellow one I used car paint in a spray gun. Don'T forget to sand it the best you can and prime it. The paint job is only as good as the prep work. If you want to paint the top ( aluminum paint or something just to make it look good.) use high temp. like 1200 or 1500 degree and don't put any clear on the top end it will turn yellow no matter if it's high temp or not. You can clear the hell out of the bottom end if you want tho.

Oh and It can be done with the motor fully assembled you just have to mask off the rest of it.

Laz said it could be bead blasted, but of course you would have to take it apart for that. I think the easy fix would be painting it as said above.

Has anyone tried CLR to get rust off there pipes? Just wondering if it would work, since it's for rust.

Does anyone know how to get rust off of 2-stroke pipes? My Banshee FMF pipes and silencers got rusted last winter hauling it home and all the salt from the roads splashed up on it.

well I run the stock and a secondary like the FST one but It's just a home made setup. it's alot cheaper that way.

The cooler itself I got at a local salvage yard. it's off of a street bike but I don't know what kind it was.

work great with the big motor. It made a h*ll of a diffrence in cooling

That is a old pic I can get you some new one if you want with the new front end:devil:

how come no one ever paints the cylinder part of the engine?
would it just attract more heat?
i personally think a black engine would look relatively good and clean

The Honda engines used to be black around 1985 - 1987. Just use caution in painting, every layer of paint holds more heat inside. Stripping the motor first with paint stripper would be best, but the motor should probably be disassembled first, as it may eat up gaskets and seals.

Well I painted my cylinder. But I only used aluminum paint. Is like a weird silver. so you can't really tell. But if you look at the red motor you can kind of see it.

Another way to clean a motor is that if you have a couple hours to spare put some varsol in a spray bottle and spray some on the motor. Then use a tooth brush to rub off all the baked on mud and the other crap that is on there. I6t works really good and it takes less time then you would think. Just try not to spray to much around the seals and gaskets

I used small felt wheels in a dremmel tool to clean mine. I had stainless steel sink cleaner(powder form) and made a paste by adding water. Dipped the felt wheel in the paste and let that dremmel tool rip. The felt wheels can be bought in packs of 10 at Sears. I used about 20 of them. The felt wheels fit in between the cooling fins of the head and take care of top and bottom at once. Once I did this it has made it alot easier to clean it after a ride. I found some dish cleaning brushes at the Dollar store that can be bent into shapes to get into those hard to reach areas. Cheap yet effective!

bump...Im looking for some options...

Just wondering if anyone has some info on the sandblasting, I heard I can plug up all open holes and sandblast it, then when finished it looks like new??? any info on this?

Also, anyone think a dremel drill with wire brushes will work??

Pappy also told me I could have the cylinder moly coated. That would make the fins look much better...
