Do I have to crack the bottom end of the motor to change my timming chain or is the top end enough? Also will a CRF 450 timing chain work and if so what is the part number?

You do not have to split the cases but you'll have to take a side case cover off. I'm not sure on the crf450 chain, I would get a D.I.D. heavy duty chain.

you can use the 450 chain, its the same as the more expensive heavy duty chains for the 400 but it cost a lot less, i dont remember what year it is that you will need though, someone else on here that has used one can tell you for sure, besides removing the side cover, you will also have to rmove the clutch basket and and a couple other gears to get the chain off of the crank gear.

you need the chain from an 02 or 03 model, which is what i have, cause the 04 is different........or and least that's what the honda shop and online microfishe says. make sure you remember how everything goes to the T. u will also need an air gun to take of/ put on the clutch basket. i also had to take off the head to get it on.

check out the frequently asked questions forum on this site and a thread on the first page talks about this timing chain and gives you the part number.

the cam chain is the same for 02-04 112 links and next time just run a small wire down from the top of the head down to inside the case hook it on the chain and pull it up or like i did and use a mechanices retrieval magnet, it is completly unecessary to take the head off :o
