I found some of the pics I took while on fires and I thought I would share em...
Here is a 747 converted into a tanker plane. It has 4 16" discharges and holds 30,000 gallons of water. Basically a show and wont ever be used on a fire but it was cool

Thats pretty awesome I cant imagine how they would get the water on a concentrated area of a fire. Thats why they use helicopters. Nice find.

A nice colorful smoke column put up by a fire near dusk... Entire sky is filled with smoke not just where you see the column

man I love my digital camera. one of the best investments ive made. got like 5 memory cards for it now. but these pics are from breaks or periods that are non risky. If that makes sense. But the best picture possibilities is when your right up on the action working your bllz off and cant get a camera out. like driving through huge walls, lol

Very under appreciated job, and way cool too.
I was a firefighter for 5yrs with the local FD. Taught soome high angle rescue classes and extrication classes. Love a good code-4. Wish I would have persued smoke jumping just a little more though! My buddy and I and a girl from Granville Ohio all took some testing and spent a few weeks in oregon over it. She got the job and we got a pat on the back.:D

Have fun and be careful, that is one of the scariest, coolest and most dangerous jobs all rolled into one.

EPDP99
12-30-2004, 09:10 AM
ya i do both, structural and wildland. was going to be a smoke jumper also but where im at has got the best of both worlds. We are trying to make our handcrew a hotshot status. got the skillz but not the education, so were are going through classes all the time for it. we do all the extrication stuff. have a hazmat team(Hazardous materials), tech rescue team(high angle, trench, confined space, water rescue all of them)

Its just the combination of materials used. it can be changed coverage(thinkness) amounts. so that way it can penetrate different forms of canopy. like forest has to be thicker and grasslands is alot thinner.

i heard a rumor that a diver was actualy sucked up by one of those sky cranes before....and he was stuck on the end, then dropped into a fire. i know its false, but have you ever heard of that?

yeah I have. those things fill so fast it would rip em apart tho. like 4000 gallons in 12 seconds or something. imagine the suction. I heard it was from a bucket like the yellow helicopter though. Although they have used buckets to rescue people from fires. people pile in the bucket and go for a ride.

ya i watched a show called "mythbusters" they built a replica of it...it pumps ou 35,000 gallons per minute...they used it in a pool, with a plastic dumby in the pool....it would not suck him up. they had to put a peice of wood on his back for it to start sucking him up, then as soon as it was lifted outside of the water......it dropped right back in becuase it had no water to syphon the suction....and couldnt keep its grip

Nice pics man! My dad used to fight forest fires in Colorado. He's told me many stories about the fires, very interesting.

I didn't take this pic, but it was taken 4 miles north of my hometown, Udall, KS. I have another pic, same scenario, which is better than this but I can't find the damn thing! I'll keep looking, but for now, enjoy!:)

This pic was on the cover of the Smithsonian magazine.
