I was thinking of the following mods for my 400ex to keep up with the 450s.

Powroll 440 bore and stroker
Racing cam
39mm FCR
Full exhaust
Larger SS valves

I also thought that doing all this would put me in the same price range as the 450s. Would it be better to do the mods or buy a 450? Thanks in advance.

imo probably a new 450 would be better. They would be more reliable than a highly modded 400. they alo have better suspension.:D

Id go with a new 450. Relieblity will be great with decent suspension and a fast motor that can be modded beyond that of a 400ex.

Im not a huge fan of the FCR, but they are ok. The Edelbrock 38MM "Doug Eichner" Carburetor is much better, I've had both.

Powroll makes decent kits. The rod it comes with is indestructable.

Racing Cam - Yes, Web makes some decent ones.

Full Exhaust - Sparks or LTE is good. Ive got the LTE.

If you get larger valves, go ahead and get the head porting at the same time.

Dont forget about the clutch, oil cooler and some of the cam components like the shortened valve guides and beefed up valve springs.

I hope I didnt miss anything

I would have to say......buy a new 450 because if you buy a 400 and trick it out it will give you more mechanical problems.

My reliablity is awesome. I let people race my 440 up comp hill all day long and they beat stock YFZs and Piped YFZs. Its being doing this for a year. It will ride like that all day long and all she needs is gas. It truely is built like a tank. As far as 450Rs, they dont quite come close to the YFZ and are no problem as well. From my other posts, you dont need that much money to build up an EX to beat those stock 450s. About $2500 or so, and your done. If you already have an EX, its cheaper to just mod it, rather than buy another quad.
