what oil are you using in the low end? i would put in some 10-30 valvoline for the winter rides, nothing too thick because it basically freezes and by the time it wrms up enough to flow it is too late and you cause engine damage. i have seen this many times before with people running 20-50 oil or gear saver from bel-ray during the cold months, thick oil and freezing temps dont mix!!

Sound like someone slapped the piston with a hammer? If so,my 400EX use to do that in the winter. They say its cause of it bein cold, that the piston needs 2 expand and its slappin off the cylinder walls?? Does it go away when its warmed up a little?Mine did.

yeah it does go away but not totally
ever since i got it its been a knocker but i figured its the nature of the beast
its just worse in the cold
are the honda engines loud or is it just mine
im talking compared to my z400 its loud

they are pretty loud, my two stroke bikes would always knock in the winter if the head was decked, piston slap, not nearly as loud as cannondales though!
