damn good question i know its probably money and time consuming and a pain in the ***...i wish my 400 had a backup kickstarter...today it was so damn gold (-7) we went to go out to start the bikes and my brand new 2 month old battery wouldnt crank over the motor...needless to say my buddy drug me around snowy roads with his 250r tryin to bump it....fianlly got er and the battery is fine now

ive been thinking about doing it. its the same exact thing as the 300 but the holes are plugged. If you took a 250x clutch side case and kickstart lever, the gears and springs inside i think u could do it. the only thing that you couldnt have is the compression release that the 250x has on the head.

IT can be done but it would require a lot of work and a lot more parts than you would think. YOu would have to use the engine cases from the 250X as well as the side case.

Yes it can be done , but you have to split the cases to put the startergear and rod in. and you have to use the 250x side case and it has to be welded and milled down for the oil pasage.

What about just buying a 250 x motor off of ebay.. After you have it just bore and stroke it to be a 300 cc motor. (282cc to be exact)

I searched around on google and it showed that the 250x and 300ex both have the same bore (74mm) but different stroke lengths. So if you put the 300 crank in the 250 would it make it a kickstart 300ex? Or is that not possible?

ya. That would make sense to me. To my knowledge they are identical except for the duration of the stroke. So ya that would probably work.

Yes a kickstart can be fitted on a 300ex, my friend as done it without splitting the cases. He has develop a kit for that; he machines parts to do the conversion. Some parts from a 250x must be used (right side engine cover, kickstart and related parts, etc...)

You can probably fit the crank of a 250x in a 300ex, but that wouldn't be to good since Honda upgraded the 300ex engine with bigger crank shaft bearing to withstand the extra load from the stroked crank.

If you're interested, my buddy can supply you with the needed parts to do the conversion

Please let me know :)
