How wide should my nerfs be?

Hey guys i finished installing my graydon proline nerf bars. Should they stick out wider than the quad is or be in so they are not as wide?

i got graydon nerf bars and mine stick out just a hair wider than my back tires .

I don't see how it could be a problem unless you ride in tight woods.
