what kind of cameras and editing stuff do u guys use when u make videos?

I've never edited anything yet, but I'm getting a Sony Handycam (digital, mini DV) for x-mas, and a friend of mine is putting Pinacle on my computer, which he claims is pretty good software. I've seen some stuff he's done and it looks really good...

I have hours of riding on tape just waiting to be edited.. any help on what programs to use would be terrific
