Well ever since it got cold my 450 hasn't been starting very well. It takes about 10 kicks for it to do anything and then it will backfire a couple more kicks and then finally start. Anybody else have starting problems. I put i drd pipe on it and haven't changed the jets because they told be that i didn't need to. I think they should be changed and i don't know what size i should go with. Can anybody help me?

its the jetting, and yes they need changed anytime you mod the intake or exhaust you need to change it. take it to a shop and they can get it done for you.

even if you didn't put the pipe on its starting to get colder out now and the air is getting denser so rejetting for the winter would be a good idea. Now that you haven't jetted for the pipe and its cold out, its twice as noticeable

First do a plug check and see where you are at . Did the pipe come with some jets ?? Just to give you a reference, I have a white bro. slip on and a ehs lid ( gets alot of air ) and I am running a 180 main with a needle jet that I got from a hop up jet kit. needle jet is in 3 rd clip. I believe it is 2 and a half turns on the air screw and it runs great. Got down to 15 degrees here tonight. Hope this will help !:)

Does anydody have just a slip on pipe on your 450 with the stock filter and air box. I'm curious what i need to change my jet to.

well you need to change your jetting up regardless, but that will not affect your starting problem. I am from canada and we are probably 20 degrees colder than you right now. what works for me is first make sure your headlights are off. on start up they rob a lot of power from the stator and believe me it really helps to have them off. next , pump your throttle 3-4 times to give it some fuel. do not give it any while kicking (only before) choke of course and should fire. do this a couple of times if ness. its soo cold here that through the site glass on the side my oil dont even move for a couple of minutes but it starts fine. jetting only affects 3/8 throttle and more not idle or start. the spark is definatly stronger w/lights out

Stock box, lid and slip-on=stock jetting.
I work on 5 450r's and run stock jetting on all with lids and slip-ons and full systems, HRC motors run the HRC needle there main=185, and a 52 pilot.
Blip the throttle a once or twice , then see if it starts better.

My HRC didn't come with a diferent pilot. Is this the reason why it keeps stalling when i give it alttile blip of throttle in gear?

Possible, HRC uses stock pilot, and it was too lean so i went 52.

Jaywoodsrider you need to run a 124 main jet with a slip on!

I have just a slip-on and ran a 125 when it was warm, but the past 2 weeks i've been stalling occasionally so i just upped to a 130...problem fixed.
Question...If i switch to a uni filter from stock with a closed box, do you think i would have to re-jet?
...And can i run an outerwear with a uni-filter? I'm thinking about a HRC lid. thanks.

There is no need to run outerwear with a foam filter. With the HRC lid my GUess on the main jet would be a 175 or somewhere closes.

yea i know but the uni filter isnt exactly foam, it has foam underneath, but the outside of it is that other kind of stuff, lol.

I run a 155 main jet with a 2" hole in the back of the air box. I have a full exhaust.

Thanks spindles, i pumped the throttle 3 times and it fired right up. z-135, thanks for the input on the jets, i'm gonna switch to a 124 and see if it runs better.
