I am going to start looking for a 250r. Something that runs, but maybe needs some attention. The idea is to see how modded out I can make it without sending it to a professional engine builder (& of course the really hard part is keeping my wife from kicking me out ;) ). Anyway, did Honda ever make any air-cooled 250r ATV's? I want one that is liquid cooled, so I am wondering if there is a specific year (or years) I should look for. Other than the liquid cooling, is one year better than the others, or all they all the same?

they made the 4 wheel version of the 250r from 86-89

the 88-89 are more desireable
the swingarms are aluminum and are solid where they bolt up to the frame(not a sleeve in the center like the 86-87 swingarms, which I may add are made of steel)

Also the 88-89 have a 1" shorter swingarm and 1" forward a-arms(to move the weight forward)

the motor mounts are different on the 88-89's too.

hope this helps

i realize you are looking for a quad but i thought i would throw this in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the only air cooled 250R's were the ATC's which were made in 81-82 and then upgraded suspension and such in 83-84, (and in 84 the ATC took 4th overall in the Baja 1000, where it outran every buggy and truck in the event and all but three motorcycles,,,and the overall winner was on an XR500R bike),,,,, and then the whole bike was redone and liquid cooled started in 85.,,,,,,,,,,just my 2 cents:D

You will probably put aftermarket plastic on it...maybe not. But the plastics changed i believe in 88. The 86-87 plastic resembles that of a 300ex with the bar mounted headlight. The latter version resembles more like the 250ex with the headlight mounted in the front plastic. That's about all i know. Good luck with the R i wanted one for a bit until i realized how much money i'd loose getting rid of my 2month old 300. I'm jealous i wish i could get an R :grr

R's are alot better than a 400ex.
Get one.

Oh yeah,,,,,,,,PDunes300EX.......the only thing that changed in 88 is the nose piece,,,,like you said,,,,,but the rear, and two front sides of the plastic remained the same,,,,different colors of course but the same shape...........just thought i would let you know...:D :D

The ATC's aren't worth very much, everyone wants the 4 wheelers. If you don't care about going around turns, the ATC is lighter and has the same motor. I usually see the ATC's under $2000 whereas the TRX's are usually over $4000.
All year TRX250R's (the 4 wheelers) are liquid cooled and all have the same bore and stroke. The 87-89 have a longer rod and different pin position on the piston (but same stroke). The 86 cylinder can be bored further (.120 vs .080 for the later ones).
I don't know how fast you can really make it without sending the motor to a builder unless you are really good at porting. Once you do the normal bolt ons like pipe, carb, coolhead, porting is the next logical step to let the motor breathe.
Good luck in your search.
