Question about rings on JE 13.8:1 Piston

My buddy has installed his second 13.8 to 1. So my question is about the top piston ring it has an (R)mark on it and his first one didn't. So my question is this does this mark mean that the ring has to face up/or down. The side of it where it contacts the cylinder didn't feel rough in either direction signifying that it needed to face a certain way. So does it have to be up or down or doesn't matter?

The letters go up. Was his first set of rings from the Sparks piston? The one I got back in March had the letter scratched off a little, but readable. I bet they are just using a stock ring pack and eliminating the 2nd compression ring (on the 2 ringer piston).

yeah his first one came from sparks and his second one he oredered from legacy atv. So it goes up, thats the way i was thinkin but wasn't for sure. But if he didn't we will correct it tomorow as the head is still off for another week gettin a valve job so thanks for your help.

Yes, the Sparks 13.8 uses stock rings, good observation, not many know that.
