I have been tossing the idea of a stock bore wiseco piston and a stage 1 cam for a while now. Now that I have my engine all apart, I have just decided to go all the way and get a 330 kit. I am going to buy Mickey Dunlaps 300 kit that comes with piston, rings, sleeve, cam ,and valve springs. So I was just wondering how anyone that already has a 330 kit likes it, and how dependable it is for them, and how long they have had it in for? Also will my stock bottom end be ok with this set up? Thanks!

Don't know much about a 330 but my brothers 350EX seem pretty reliable. It has tons of power and has been doing fine for quite a while now.

Iv got a 300 with the wiesco .60 over piston and a hotshot cam. Runs sweet, lots of power. Make sure you adjust your valves correctly or you'll run into some troubles.

Ya, I would imagine that a .60 will give it summore, but I am going all out and need to know some info on a 330 kit. And yes I have already done a search and read everything about a 330 that has been posted, lol. But thanks anyways!

There was a good article on the FST 330EX in June 2004 ATV ACTION. Mickey said that it was reliable... of course he would... but he's on here a lot and I would tend to believe him. He's given a ton of free advice on here.

bump. Anyone have a 330 kit? I am open to all suggestions on brands, parts, ect..... I am mainly worried about the relyability of the kit, and my bottom end.

it should be reliable, As long as you keep up the maintance.... that is the way most motors get ruined just not keeping up on them. But your stock valve train should be still working great, with this i would also recommend new clutch plates. I'm currently running 406 stroker with the stock valve train and so far its holding up well. I also have Mickey's cam in my motor and it helps wonders on the bottom to mid range. I would say with anyone Mickey is the right person to have your motor built with.

I am probablly not going to have him build the motor for me. My grandpa and I already tore my motor down, and are just going to have a local shop put in the new sleeve. And we will most likely do the valve springs oureselves. I doubt it is that hard, because he has done it on different motors before.

you can do the assembly yourself, but if you want to port it, send it to a good builder. i suggest gthunder

I'm not going to bother with porting it. I dont think it is worth the money to do that.

you're about crazy too, porting it is the ONLY way to really get good power out of a 300ex

yes, the bigger piston makes room for more feul and air, but the porting gives the room to get it in and out quicker. with the stock ports, your just making the motor that much more restrictive. gthunder does awesome porting for a great price. www.gthunder.com

Do you know what kind of price they charge. Because I have almost no money at all, and it will be a stretch for me just to get hardened rockers and a HD timing chain.

The 300ex head is actually just a 250X head, and those ports were small for a 250 engine let alone your 300 engine!!! Porting a 300 is supposed to be one of the best investments you can buy!

Well I ordered my kit a couple hours ago. I got the 330 piston, sleeve, cam, valve springs, clutch springs, HD rockers, HD cam chain, and i think thats it. I just realized, does anyone know if gaskits are included? what about circlips, and wrist pin? The kit price was 800$ even.

Mickey told me that I didnt need a prot and polish with the kit, plus I dotn have the money for it. This is the only thing I am getting for christmas. I will let you know how much power it gains, I read an artcile on thsi kit in ATV sport magazine, and they had the 330 dead even on top speed with a stock z-400. They also said the HP for a stock 300ex is 15, and with the kit and a pipe, the HP is 32:devil:

I ended up getting a web cam stage 2, springs, rockers, timing chain from a place near me. I saved about 200 bucks by doing that.

sorry to burst your bubble, but your not gonna be close to 32 horsepower. my 350 with cam and full race port had 32. you'll be lucky if you hit 28,especially w/o a port job, which you dont need for it to run, but you do need to make good power. if you dont need a port job, why does mickeys own 300ex have it in the sport class?

sorry bradley your wrong, i have that issue and i have no trouble believin that mickey dunlap could pull 32 hp out of a 300ex.Its there in writing.

who cares about dyno numbers, let the results speak for themselves. a good 330 kit will run with a stock z400 and beat most stock 400ex's. but bradley300 is right, you'll probably have like 25 hp depending on cam and carb selection, a bit more with porting&bigger intakes. but the torque increase makes it so much more fun to ride, easier too.

or you could always try the 380 kit.

articles dont mean chit!he also had a 13:1 piston, bigger carb, porting and way taller gearing, none of wich you have. you will need more work than you have b4 you can run with a z400

hondardr4life
12-16-2004, 07:50 AM
He only had an 11.1 piston, and a stock carb.

well, he wasnt getting 35 horsepower. not trying to be an ***** to you, but you cant believe everything you hear, especially from tyhe person trying to sel it to you. all i can say is you will dissapointed with the performance of your new motor if you plan on hanging with z400's in drag races thanks to embelished numbers
