ok, a few weeks ago i was asking about the crf 250 engine for a project that has been in my head for awhile.
i have access to a dual overhead cam, 250cc, electric start 12:1 honda engine and im considering either a 450r based chassis or possibly even a cannondale for the weight savings. im leaning towards the R .
any more opinions?

The R would be sweet, but it would be awesome to see the Cannondale frame done up. I have never seen an engine swap into a cannondale frame.

someone has put a yzf426 motor in a cannondale frame before, and i know of someone putting a ktm motor in a cannondale frame
yea a cannondale swap would be cool ive never seen 1 and it would be light

i would consider using a 250r frame, they are a lot shorter(vertical) then the new 4-strokes, and there are tons of parts for them. since this will be for your kid, you will want a smaller frame.

considered it but i know the 4 stoke will fit in the R chassis and i imagine it also would fit in the 250r with out much trouble. heck i might even use a 300ex chassis!

use the 300ex frame and body it ouwld be the ultimate sport class race or begginer.

pappy i think a 450r or a 400ex would be the way to go... plastic, seats, brakes, etc are all very cheap for them bc they are made in america... there is also a huge supply of parts just layin around everywhere it seems...

It would be, but 400ex parts are half the price of 300ex...

I say scence u have all the stock R parts it would be easier to do it with a R frame.Although it would look really sick done up in a c dale frame.
kinda ot, but on some other site i saw a yfz with a yz 250f engine

so it looks like the motor ur gettin is a yzf or rm or kx right.... because the honda is a sohc.. if it is a yamaha, i've heard from my bike ridin buddies that you don't want a 02 and under because they don't have a decompression release and are hard to start. and about putting it in a 300, i don't think this be allowed at a sanctioned race, because the 200/300 class is air cooled
Pappy
12-09-2004, 08:15 PM
no the engine IS a honda:devil: its from a street bike that jeff from the quadshop turned me on to. it was only sold in the USA for 3 years but is very popular in europe. the fact that it has E start, a good compression (12-1) and is cheap is the reason im considering it.
id still like to get my hands on a 250cc based engine that is more popular but the prices seem a bit high
and im not worried about racing it in any events unless its an open class. its more of a project for fun then a serious racer.

Pappy, i think that this is an awesome idea!! sorta on the lines of a CRF 450 conversion but going with the CRF 250 motor would put it in a much more interesting class... i've always wondered if anyone had attempted this yet, and now that i see a couple of those quads complete, i think it is well worth it...
I would use the 450r chassis, cuz the parts are easy to get ahold of and the chassis has a nice look to pop in that motor... So are you gonna make it a modded quad, or keep everything stock but the motor??? i think a fully modded CRF 250 R would be tight!!!
PS, pappy did you get my hubs and rear brake to powdercoat yet>?> if not it should be there in a couple days... also, your exhaust is in that box also... any questions on the PC job or anything, shoot me a pm

i would seriously consider a 250r frame, the distance from the foot pegs to the seat is a lot less then the 450r, i think your son will have problems reaching the pegs while leaning, i have problems with it.

i have secured a new 450R frame and subframe. and i have purchased all the needed suspension parts (hubs, calipers brackets etc) and a trip to Burgards will net me the a arms, stem and swing arm.
all i need to do now is find me the engine:) it would be much easier to do a yfz hybrid because the engines (250cc thumper) are easier to come by

i dont ride them? i bet you ive run more races then you have this season. i garuntee the bikes ive built have been thrashed since ive built them, infact i know they have.
btw..how many races did you run on your factory yfz with a few bolt on parts?
my wallet isnt connected to my brain. it takes money to make money, dont mistake that for unintelligence. maybe you need to spend more time on the seat of that yfz before you bark out who doesnt ride what.
and i dont pretend to be joe racer, but i wont be belittled by some arm chair know it all. get out in the garage and do some work on quads before you spout off to someone who has a wrench in his hand 7 days a week sport

I understand exactly where you are coming from, and am no way trying to raise your kids for you because i know you hate that (and i woulda already ****ed up im sure)
But you are taking him from a 90, which he has clearly mastered, to (if you go the 250cc thumper route) a bike that is somewhere in the mid to high thirties in horsepower. There should be some step in between in my opinion, stick him on a 300ex or 400ex for a year, might not be as special to him or to you, but its a critical stage.
and, if you go the 250cc route, stay away from the 2001 yammy, no auto decompressor lever and its a pain

Well, i just havnt been paying a whole great deal of attention to this thread, but thats what it sounded like you were hinting at. Either way, i do believe he could manage the power, but he probably would be faster on a machine more suitable to his needs. Either way, youll make the right decision, always do...

i dont think he could handle the power...not yet. but he is at that age where the next 3 years he will grow like a weed and the quad will be there for him to grow into.
the power doesnt concern me as much as the weight. he has the brains to know when to stay off the throttle and get on the brakes but the controling factor is that he isnt physically strong enough, or even heavy enough to handle the quad. alot of growing gets done between 11 and 14 and thats when the project will pay off.
and if i do a good job on it and just so happen to sell 4 or 5 of them then so be it.

SRH, i seem to recall doing a flame battle on the boards with you last night, u just dont give up, do ya ? First you diss Canada, then you go and diss Pappy, and his quad that he worked on, and bought with his own money, I dont think he really care what you think of it, or he would of asked you before he built it. So since its his, just keep ur comments to yourself, before you get banned from the boards.
And why wouldnt pappy go crazy with the powerdercoating and polishing ? He owns his own PC business, who wouldnt powdercoat every possible part if you have the option for free .. ?

why not tell me something important...like the weight center will be too far biased to the rear and it will handle like a fat kid riding a tonka truck? why not tell me the engine maybe too narrow and the kick start may not come close to clearing the frame? why not tell me the engine has a tendency to need the valves adjusted damn near every 2 hours. why not tell me......
just because i dont post alot of tech information doesnt mean im not knowledgable. maybe i am trying not to come off like a know it all and would like to include the membership in problem solving and working out problems associated with a build?
srh...you have made too many people think your attitude is that of a freshly banded bull and it gets you no where. if your goal is to see how many people think your a highly pissed off sourpuss then buddy...you are on the right course:D

people who use that expression are trying to cover the fact they dont have the intellect to openly debate an issue. the whole purpose of an arguement is to sort out issues. unfortunatley most people cant get thier thought process working well enough to express themselves in a meaningful manner:D

I think Pappy kind of jumped the gun on this one. You're a moderator. I think one of the qualifications of being a mod is to set an example for the rest of the members, which I believe you have failed to do in this thread.

That's the thing, Pappy doesn't go around being like im the moderator so do what i say!....He's just like one of the normal members...and he acts like a normal member until someone goes way outa line or posts something inappropriate! Then he acts appropriately. Just my .02

thanks for the info. i dont have to set an example because i am a mod, and when someone tries to kick me in the nutz i will respond, just because alot of folks cant get thier brain out of 1st gear doesnt mean i will gear down to wait up for them. this is the information superhighway not joe's driving school:D

I'd use the 450r base. OEM parts are even CHEAPER than 400ex stuff. Honda made racing affordable again!

haha this is all BS... i think we should solve this little arguement with a poll on whos quad (SRH or Pappy) is better... how bout SRH posts his pic of his quad, and Pappy posts a pic of his and let the battle begin..
SRH, this ones for you !! Have you personally ever done business with Ken?? Well if you have done business with him and have gotten parts pc'd by him, or have boughten parts from him, you would know very well that this guy is a genuine person. You would also realize WHY everyone looks up to him, both as a builder and a person.. Personally, i think that his quad is an amazing piece of machinery, and most of all it reflects him as a person.. AND that by far should be 100% respected!!!Through thick and thin, pappy has went about to service all of his customers to the best of his ability, and that is something that most can't find these days... Most men that are as respected as him would take it for granted, but it seems to me that Ken never can have enough friendships, and that is an awesome trait!!!
Thanks for everything Pappy!!!!

no prob man, just stating was i think about you.. it really pisses me off when a guy comes on here and attempts to rip apart someone that is so well respected... i am so sure that many others on here would say the same things that i stated earlier...
it just goes to show how imature this "SRH" is by saying that **** bout prostitution.. oh well, if you stick 30,000 plus people on a site, theres bound to be a couple dumbass' in the group right?? lol
