The 400ex 2005 have new gear ratios. Ok.
With this new gear ratios, compared with the previous 400ex,
What do you feel in different gears: + torque, - torque, +velocity - velocity ????? What?
What do you think about this new perfomance?
PD. Excuse me for my bad english.:)

got sand?

i believe they lowered the front sprocket from a 15 to a 14 tooth. this will give more low end power but you will suffer up top.

Ive have an 02 and have ridden an 05. the gears felt a tad farther apart on the 05. If they did any sprocket changes they made the gearing higher.

I think that if your running 20" tires, the stock gearing was great, possible a little too low. With 22's either a 15t or 14t sprocket work great, with a stock 38t rear sprocket. Just depends on your riding style!

ok guys, the new gearing is 14/39. this is more low end power from both sprockets than in the previous years. i would think they must have changed them internally unless this has killer low end power. i did talk to an individual that had an older model and his buddy has a new 05. the kid on the older model had 14/38 gearing with stock sized tires. he said with 14/38, he had more top speed than the 05. i found that hard to believe. either one or two things:

the new ones just comes with low end in mind with the low end sprockets or the kid on the 05 didn't have his throttle cable adjusted properly. i found you can gain 5mph up top if it isn't adjusted properly.

maybe they did change something internal, besides the reverse. only time will tell.

just wondering what you mean when you say adjusted properly. i never read the owners manual, but i did adjust mine myself, i got 1/8th to 1/16th inch more pull at the carb when i adjusted it it. when i adjust it i set it so the stop on the throttle hit simultaneously or a hair before it hits the one one the carb. is that right? i have an 04 400ex

the throttle cable doesn't have to be perfect. you just need to make sure there isn't more than about 1/4 inch of slack in the lever. more than that and your carb may not be opening up all the way. it makes a huge difference after you adjust it from coming off the show room floor with a bunch of slack.

I have a brand new 04 and my friend has a brand new 05, once we broke them in we raced and I beat him by about 2 bike lengths. We were on sand though and he may have just broke traction. We only raced twice and then hit the trails.

I never payed much attention to the slack in my throttle but im going to adjust it right now.
