I like to just run the header with no silencer at all.If I go riding on the National Forest I just wrap a piece of screen door around the end of the pipe and fasten it on there with a tie strap for a spark arrestor.;)

I wish I could still find the DG RCM pipe.

400exrider707
12-10-2004, 12:18 PM
I'm not a big fan of DG they always seemed a little low-budget to me, not as bad as cobra, but still low-budget. I run a fmf titanium-4 and I love the sound, not too loud, but nice growl, good power too.

kwatts400
12-11-2004, 12:14 AM
I was definately kidding about the RCM. It was an older pipe made by DG that was basically the same as a Cobra reverse megaphone pipe. I had one on my first quad, a suzuki lt230e. It made a pretty big difference in power, but it made a bigger difference in just being louder. Pretty much just an open pipe.

When I got my 400EX I got a Big Gun system, really did'nt notice any difference. Then tried the Duncan doublebarrel, made great power fast but was really loud. Now I've got Sparks X-6 and I'm pretty happy with sound and power from it. Duncans new FatBoy-4 looks cool.

I have a biggun (the new style) and i love it, i had the old style and sold it to get the new style. Here in AZ, the biggun and sparks are the #1 pipes on the dyno at my engine builders shop. he has a few bikes with biggun and sparks pipes and they run neck and neck at glamis (same mods of course). those two are my favs.i never see any hmf or lrd's out here, know one sells them anywhere, i wonder why:ermm: i never would hear about them if it wasnt for this sight. 4stroke wars is all about sparks, biggun and wb?

:huh oh my god i can't believe you just said that, is this something your buddies or your dad told you or something unfortunantly your statment is not true, if i didn't feel like annoying the world and myself i could run the bike for months on end with nothing but a header with no damage to the motor

but i have to admit your the first to come up with the rings one usally the one everyone uses is you'll drop a valve......... which won't happen either, do you seriously think a tc shorty offers a great deal more back pressure than your coffee can, all a tc shorty does is pretty much make your head pipe 6" longer and some packing that really doesn't do much good anyways

ok, ive been around alot of different set-ups on 400ex's...and to me personally i have found that the Yoshimura RS1 has the smoothest and u get the power u want at any time. Now for your stockers i would choose the DMC Alien exhaust. For the stock motor it seems to put the most power out. Even though it is not a top name it has impressed me alot more then the Sparks, FMF, Big Gun (worst exhaust ever), HMF, all these big stars have nothing on the DMC if u are running a stock motor. Now if u have some work done the DMC does not produce the power as much. Maybe because it is too free flowing. Who knows but heres my answer to the question :

STOCK SETUP - DMC Alien full system (499.99 plus tax)

BUILT MOTOR (or basically any true motor work like piston, cam, head, anything like that) - Yoshimura RS1 full system (399.99 plus tax)

EXDUNER127
12-30-2004, 11:41 AM
What my engine builder has said from his dyno tests, the best exhausts he recommends for the most power...

Sparks (x-6 best pipe for big motors)
runners up
biggun, Lrd, hmf

he said dmc and yoshis are good if you keep your motor stock, if you pay attention to the head pipes, the top exhausts have larger diameter, and dmc, yoshi etc have smaller diam. the more air pushed through the better the exhaust!

QuadJunkies
12-30-2004, 11:53 AM
in some instnaces, smaller is better.... Maybe not so much on the EX,but on a Predator ,larger gave no gains what so ever.......

EXDUNER127
12-30-2004, 11:59 AM
it also depends on what all you have done to the bike, a stock motor would be best with a smaller pipe because not much airflow as say a motor with cam, piston , and porting...there you will have more airflow and a bigger pipe will let out the more air that the motor wants to release. So there really isnt a best pipe, there is just a pipe that suits your bike the best, but there are chitty pipe like cobra:huh

I do not know pappy. The only person that is willing to post gains for HP and Torque is Laz. I had a Thunder and got rid of it. The ringing in my ears after each race was getting old. If it had a spark arrestor in it I would have probably kept the thing.

But, I think my next one is going to be an HMF.

How is the White Bros R4? Would the R4 header and slip on make more power than just the HMF slip on?

Metzroth
01-05-2005, 01:58 PM
Also what is the difference between a full R4 and an R4 silencer bolted to an R4 header? is there any difference?!

EXDUNER127
01-05-2005, 02:09 PM
First of all any full exhaust (well most) is better than a slip on, the R4 is very under appreciated, becuase it is a very good exhaust, just most people dont know so they give bad advice, some people are just to loyal to what they own, and because they own it they think it is the best:o

Abd your question to a full R4 exhaust compared to a r4 slip on with r4 header....:ermm: that doesnt make sense, they sound the same to me?

Metzroth
01-05-2005, 02:11 PM
So you think the R4 head pipe and the R4 silencer will be as good as an HMF slip on? Would it be better if I got HMF slip on and a ported stock header?

EXDUNER127
01-05-2005, 02:19 PM
Do you mean, the R4 full system or what, you say R4 slip on and R4 head pipe. If you are talking about the full system, then yah it will be very noticably better than just the hmf slip on. where are you getting the R4 from if you choose?

Metzroth
01-05-2005, 03:44 PM
I'm getting it from 2 different people on exriders. I'm buying a slip on R4 and then I'm buying the R4 Headpipe

As for "best", I can't really answer, but I certainly know it is NOT the FMF Quiet pipe. We put one on my gf's quad, and she said she actually saw a DECREASE in top end over the stocker.

EPDP99
01-18-2005, 03:36 PM
well i run trinity since they built my motor. but with it built like it is i think the x-6 might suit me better due to a bigger head pipe than the trinity. but ill have the dyno sheet of my motor and exhaust combo in a couple of days.

wilkin250r
01-20-2005, 12:11 PM
Personally, I would like to see dyno and noise comparisons between some of the top contenders. I would REALLY like to see a comparison between the X-6 and LTE. I would be willing to do it, but I don't have either one, and I don't have a proper dyno within easy driving distance.

I hope youre not buying the regular slip on and the regular head pipe!!! The silencer for the R4 full system is completely different than the plain slip on for the stock header... These 2 will NOT work together... You need to have the R4 silencer FOR the full system and then the R4 header otherwise youll have to use the R4 slipon on your stock pipe... They dont go together like the pro circuit and FMF do....

Metzroth
01-24-2005, 07:57 PM
I decied I'm not getting a White Bros. anyways but thank you for following up on my earlier post. Yes that is what I meant and if I woulda bought it they wouldn't have worked together.

Ok I'm going to do a list for power and then I'll give you my insight. I've read off dozens of sites and read hundreds of forums on here and other sites trying to figure out what the best pipe is. I haven't read about all the pipes out there so I'm just going to list what I have read about.

HP Gain:(Best - Worst)
1.)Sparks X-6
2.)HMF(Mid-Top end)
3.)Big Gun(Low-Mid range)
4.)Pro Circuit T-4
5.)White Bros. E-Series (Low-Mid Range)

Sparks X-6 is the best pipe for all around power low-mid-top. But it is very loud and pretty expensive. $489 Ceramic. $549 with spark arrestor. (FULL)

HMF has good mid to top end gains and has optional quiet core.
A little pricy at $429 but IMO a better deal than sparks and comes with spark arrestor/quiet core if you ask for it. (FULL)

Big Gun has awesome low end to mid range power gains. You can pick between Quite Series and Race Series. $397.99 (FULL)

Pro Circuit T-4 has good all around gains with an available quiet core. $269.99 (SILENCER ONLY)

White Bros. E-Series is a good all around pipe (all of these pipes are excellent) but does not live up to the quality of any of the other pipes and the power gains are not as good from what I've heard. White Bros. Claims 2-4HP gain with silencer only. Show me the dyno :blah: . It is the lowest priced. $215(SILENCER ONLY)

All of these pipes are pretty good so alot of the choice you make is just which brand you prefer. But there are differences.

I have tried three different slip-ons and the only one i kinda liked was a white bros. I finally decided to drop a little money and bought a fatboy4 and the pipe is BAD:devil: It gave me a gain of six tenths in the eigth of a mile run. The fatboy4's sound is like no other and it is a gorgeous looking pipe. I have had great success dropping those TRX450 guys and can out run a 660 raptor with ease. :D no offense. But if the fatboy4 is not what you like just use this piece of advice go with the full system.

NTPracing22
01-30-2005, 08:56 AM
LRD-by far the best sounding pipe I've ever head. at idle it sounds like an old hotrod (if you've got a cam & high comp. piston) and it isn't loud until you roll the throttle past half to 3/4 throttle, that baby just yells.

But besides sound, it gives a lot of mid end power.

bbhondas
01-31-2005, 01:04 PM
I heard the cobras arent that good of a pipe, they cause alot of the hondas to loose power to do backpressure

I think that there really isn't a best pipe out there for the masses. Most of us have some sort of mod on our quads.

I'm running a WB R4 pro meg full system on my Sparks 416 and I don't have any complaints regarding it's performance. The noise is a bit loud, but I try to not ride where that is being monitored. If I could've gotten the Sparks X-6 for the price I got my R4 for, I would be sporting an X-6 system. (R4 in the box for $225 wouldn't you?)

However, when my 400 was in a more stock form the WB e-series worked great. The sound was nice and great performer. Keep in mind Dirt Wheels' 400ex pipe shoot out helped me make that decision. Since then, there are more pipes available like LRD, HMF, and of course Sparks.

just my .02 cents.

I just bought a Yoshimura Pro-Series Tri-oval full system. (titanium) This pipe is so awesome. I have a stock 400ex, cept for a k and n air filter, so getting this pipe felt like this difference between night and day, though, i haven't tried anything else out, but I am really impressed with this pipe, and it only weights a little over 4 pounds. It costed me about 700 dollars, but it was all worth it.

I dont have alot of cash and i cant decide between getting the slip on for less or droping some cash down and getting the full system. Is thier a big diffrence between the 2? Could i always get the slip on now and the header pipe and evrything else later? some people have metioned that might not fit later......?

There is supposedly about a 2 HP difference between slip-on and full. I got my HMF header already and its much bigger than stock so I'm sure it will flow alot better. The silencer ya gotta have anyways. I would watch on ebay and on here and see what you can get used. I was lucky enuf to find the header on ebay for $102 brand new. HMF has good prices direct from them but I got a bit of a deal, that will make it a little cheaper. So for about $303 I'm getting a brand new full system. Just watch for deals and when you have a chance snatch them. You wont be dissapointed with HMF.

I don't care what anyone says I like mi WB e-series. It made a huge difference and isn't super loud. Dyno results show it is one of the best pipes. I can't stand real loud pipes.

Yup most of us use the sport. The ballance just has a torque modifier jigamawaht that makes your power band start later and last longer. It "helps reduce unnecesairy wheel spin". Seems like a waste of money to me.

Which pipe is better, a LRD Complete Exhaust or the Curtis Sparks X-6 System??

Sparks is the best pipe for power for the 400ex hands down.

I'm guessing around 104db but im not sure. It's one of the loudest if not the loudest and ct's pipe is 102. I'm almost sure sparks is louder. Sparks offers a spark arrestor for the x-6. I would also look into an HMF if i were you. Comparable power to the Sparks and not as loud or as expensive.

Metzroth

Thats what im running right now :p. Mine actually sounds ok. But it's still not loud enough for me. Doesn't have that grunt when pulling really hard either. I'm sending my HMF header to be Jet-Hot coated sterling finish and then i'm ordering the polished aluminum silencer from HMF for the larger inlet on the HMF header.
I'm hoping i will have some $ left to buy a 450r carb after reading quadjunkies posts about it.

I called Sparks a bit ago and yes.... Aprrox. a 104 DB.. If you add a spark arrestor(which I would HAVE to have) you lose about 15% increase... I think Ill lean a bit more towards a HMF.... Dont they have an Orange one ???:D

IMO no the sparks system is not worth what it costs unless you don't have a limit on how loud you can be where you ride. The the HMF is best for the money and much quieter. Quadjunkies: Yup they do have orange and lots of other colors. Here are all the colors they offer.

imho here is how it goes

HMF for your stock to mild engine(416 and under w/ stg 1 cam and few internal mods)

X-6 or TC for your mild to full blown race engines(426+, stg 2 cam, and the works on the internals)

Big Gun is good for stockers

Yoshi is bleh

White Bros R4 is good for stockers

Those are the only ones I have personal expierence w/ so I shall comment no more.

Recently bought a 2005 TRX400 EX5 (dont know what the 5 is for), and I'm noticing that a lot of the aftermarket parts vendors dont list anything for it yet.

A parts counter guy at the Honda dealership near me said that my 2005 doesn't need a FULL system w/header as the exhaust already has a header.

I see the dual pipes coming out of the head, but is that in fact any better/worse than an aftermarket pipe out there? I could get an HMF slip on for cheaper if the stock header is no different than an HMF full system.

Metzroth
04-07-2005, 10:25 PM
go back and tell the guy at the dealer near you he is a moron. You are shopping for aftermarket parts. Of course it has a header. An aftermarket header will give you better flow and a better powercurve than just a slip on (atleast the HMF will). Alot of people also use the FMF power bomb header. HMF is the way to go.

if its anything like my R4 it will sound good. While I'd still like to have an HMF, I can't complain about my R4. It along with the cam and airfilter add a chit load of power. Also looks and sounds super mean. It is louder than a FMF Powercore 4 on a wr426 (higher compression and bore). Anyways just my .02 cents.

Metzroth
04-28-2005, 11:35 PM
about the question about the carbon pro HMF vs sport HMF, the only thing different about the carbon is it has a torque modifier (something like that). Anyways it takes away low end to reduce unneccesairy wheel spin. (Sounds stupid to pay more for it to me). If i want my wheels to spin i wanna have the torque there to do it. Also, IMO the carbon looks sort of....trashy?

I loved my Yosh slip on, but when it was time to go to a a full I went with the X-6. The X-6 is amazing.

what do you think about getting an fmf powerbomb headder and a hmf or sparks slip on.

i think the powerbomb was the one you guys are always talking about

Sparks does not sell just a slip on.

I would just buy the complete system instead of peicing one together with different brand parts.

do u have to cut anything like the headpipe when you put on a slip on?

Nope, all that I know of except the TC pipe there aren't any mods needed to be done. Just take off the original and replace it with the new.

I have been contemplating the same question. It seems that HMF gets the majority vote here, but I was also told by a dealer that the Dr. D was great for 400EX's.

So between HMF and Dr. D, what is better? Considering not only power but sound and noise too? I don't want it too loud.

I have never had either, but I have heard the HMF, it is towards the louder side of pipes, but it def isn't the loudest. It was a good looking pipe and it sounded good. I have never seen the Dr. D pipe. If it was between the 2 I would go HMF.

I heard the hmf on a couple of yfz450's, and they were pretty loud. My Dr. D. is quite a bit more quiet than the hmf.

I bought the quiet core for it, but never bothered to put it in. I'm pretty happy with power increase as well.

Yeah I am definately not looking for a real loud exhaust. That's why I haven't already decided on a HMF. Are the power gains from a Dr. D and/or others comparable to a HMF? Is there a significant difference in power? BTW, I just do trail riding. No MX or anything.

Thanks for the info and opinions!

I seem to recall that the Dirtwheels YFZ pipe shootout had maybe a 1 hp difference at peak hp between the Dr. D. and the hmf. They gave the Dr. D. the win due to good power gains throughout the powerband + lower noise. For just trail riding, I think you will be plenty satisfied with the Dr. D.

If you still want a little less noise, I'll sell you my quite core, I'm pretty sure they are universal fit.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. Just when I thought I was making up my mind, I just so happen to ask a couple of guys at a local Honda dealer today what they thought. They, along with a guy at another Honda dealer, said that White Brothers makes the best, in their opinion, slip-on for 400EX's. I don't know who to listen to now, and I know the question is kind of impossible to answer - everyone has a different favorite.

So now the question is: White Bros. vs. Dr. D?

What White Bros pipe were they talking about?

hmm...what would be the loudest pipe? TC? DG? Cobra? My R4 is pretty damn loud. Louder then my neighbors piped harley.

I am sure if it came down to it, the winner would be the better rider or the one with the better built motor. I would bet the pipes are pretty even. We don't see many HMFs over on this side of the US.

The dealers were just talking about White Bros. being the best overall. Specifically, I would say that they were referring to the E-series, although I do not specifically know the differences between the E-series and E2?

If you are looking for a Sparks Pipe, I would go through Sparks direct (661) 872-4343

I have a 2002 400EX with the X-6 Pipe and header and I love the sound.
