well, just now i was replacing my oil filter, took the bolts out, put the new filter in, put both bolts in, but what has happened was i tighened the long bolt good, but when i went to tighten the smaller one it snaps off!!! now the other part is stuck in there, but the oil filter cap seems to stay in place. so what shoulld i do about it, it will probly be a b|tch to get out, and i dont want my cap coming off.

Where did the bolt snap off? Would you be able to pull it out with some pliers if you took the cover off? Or is the bolt snapped off in deeper in the motor?

dril a line in the bolt, then take a flathead screwdriver & unscrew it

its a small piece of metal stuck in the hole, if i could unscrew it, would any standard screw that size fit?

well it's a metric but yes any metric bolt that size will fit

i did this too...got lucky and used a small pair of needle nose pliers and turned it out....i thought i was up $hit creek without a paddle...it was right before a race...but i got it out, went to the local hardware store with the other bolt and they had one...so it was like a $.25 fix

Spend a few extra bucks for a Left Hand Drill bit. Center punch the broken bolt EXACTLY in the center and use the Left Hand Bit to drill it out. It will probably unscrew real easy before it drills into the broken bolt.

With the head being broke off,it has no pressure on it.Get it out with a screwdriver.

Go to Sears and get you some screw outs. I broke off a bolt that same size and the screw out removed it very easily. Just center punch the bolt and put that screw out on a drill and itll come right out. They are worth buying if your like me and always break bolts and strip screws...

i broke both of them. i took a chainsaw sharpening file and got a hammer and genly tapped it counterclockwise and it came out. Be careful not to mess up the threads.

go to coast to coast or any other hardware store. they make a drill bit called "easy out" or something like that. its just a drill thats reversed. you take a normal drill, make a hole in the center of the bolt, take the easy out, put it in the drill and drill into the hole you already made, should come out pretty easy.

did the same thing to my 416 but i got real screwd cause it broke off clear at the end and i ended up having to take off that whole case cover to get to the broke off part and used and easy out then had to re thread the threads finally got it tho

for all u that have not done this to save a LOT of time do not over tighten your bolts

i did the same thing to both sides so i ended up drilling them both out and buyin a heli coil which alows u to put new threads in. it comes in a kit with the special tool, a tap and everything to give u a new hole, so if your tryin to do it right it works awsome. ive gone 4 or 5 changes since then and the new threads hold up awsome. the downside is it will cost u about 40 bux for the kit.

I did the same thing. Just take a pointy punch tool and hammer. Put the punch tool at an angle and slowly tap it, thus turning the bolt to the left. You will save having to buy an easy out. It worked for me.
