For drop in cams, good ones are

1. TC 924 (mx) or 926 (gncc)
2. Sparks aggressive drop in cam
3. White Brothers all around or track cam
4. Hotcams stage 1 or 2

Non drop in (requires hardened rockers, heavy duty valve springs + retainers, maybe shortened guides and heavy duty valves)

1.Sparks race cam
2.Web Cam

I much difference is a Stage 1 cam or something like that going to make on an otherwise stock bike? I don't want an exhaust cause their too loud, maybe a head-pipe, K&N and cam, or is it a waste of time and money without an exhaust?

when my buddy added his stage 1 to his low compression 406, it helped out. by the way, this was with the stock exhaust. when he got is sparks pipe, it opened it up a ton. i realize you won't get the best with a stock pipe, but it will help. i wouldn't go more aggressive than stage 1 hotcam with the stock pipe though.

I like my XR400 cam! You may be able to pick one up used here for cheap. It's a big improvement over the tractor like EX cam.

dude dont even waste your time adding a cam or a headpipe if you are using the STOCK exhaust and silencer. That thing is not only bulky, heavy and ugly, but it is made from the factory to choke up the motor to meet regulations. Youd be better off adding a pipe with a quiet core like the HMF over adding a cam on the stock exhaust. The stock exhaust sucks, and getting rid of it should be your first order of business in all honesty...

My stock exhaust is modded, and while I may be surprised of the power I am giving up by having it, I can ride almost anywhere all day long and not bother anyone. I'd also say that with my mods, which prolly cost less than a nice complete exhaust system, mine will most likely take a stock, piped bike anyday.

i think the TC is one of the best top end cam I've seen for the 400ex, then I's say Web for mid-low

i agree. my buddy with a low compression 406 and a stage 1 hotcam, with stock exhaust never lost to any piped, filtered, and jetted 400ex. it was plain and simply faster than they were. that included bikes with sparks pipes too. so it wasn't just like he was racing bikes with junk pipes. by the way, i jetted these other piped bikes and i jet his too. so i know they were running air fuel ratios that were very close.

The Facts.

Full exhaust system = $500+

Cam & Piston 416kit = $300+

The piped quad will loose all day long to the sleeper with stock exhaust.
