the 400ex has a safety thing that doesnt allow it to be started in gear with the clutch lever out. u can start it in gear with the clutch pulled in but not out.

Yes the clutch is always in when this happens. It does this sparatically so I was wondering if it's an electrical problem with the bike?

Les,it is probably a bad clutch start switch. The one that the clutch lever activates.

take the switch off and by-pass it so you can start your quad in any gear with or with out the clutch

Thanks for the help guys. Bypassed the wires at the black box last night and the problem is solved. Took less than 5 minutes to complete.

alright do you just clip the switch of and splice the wires together?
...also with the kill switch...cut the two wires of and splice them together does that put it in "shut off" mode? I have my tethered kill wired in series with the ground wire off the kill switch so i could by pass it in a race if i need to...the tether only works when the kill switch is switched to "kill"...but anyway I have removed the controls and I just spliced the two wires off the kill switch together and im hoping that it is wired to "kill" so my tether works...is this right?

confusing i know!
