Don't even think about going higher than 6 inches from the factory height - unless, of course, you get a written OK from the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. You don't need a permission slip if yours is a multipurpose ride atop a truck chassis that sees some dirt.

thats what the site says about NC. whats that last sentence mean though? whats this aleged "multipurpose ride atop a truck chassis"

a friend of mine up here in PA had a lifted f-150 with 42's on it. lifted bout a foot and a half. completely built. he had to put near stock tires on it to get it inspected. do you have any idea how funny that big of a truck looks with 31 inch tires on it?!:D

Im in Shelby, NC and I have seen trucks (on the street) lifted like probably 3-4 ft. from cement to bottom of truck, HUGE tires. I think it was a S-10, painted lime green. He works up town at Advance auto parts where cops ride the roads and he never gets anything said to him...

well thats good to hear that i wont run into too much. but here around greensboro there arent too many lifted trucks. there is one yota that has i think 39.5's and coil overs on the back that is just rediculously bad ***. i want the jeep up on atleast 38's (its getting the SB 350/400 hybrid, its already carburated so its gonna be fun.... ). i was just worried about not being able to lift it that high because ive heard they changed the lift laws and if you didnt have your truck inspected like that befor the laws came into effect then you couldnt do it. i guess ill find out tomorrow! later:devil:

NEW YORK

All '90 and newer commercial vehicles and trucks can't go crazy and get that bumper above 24 inches from the ground. Also keep in mind tht headlights must not be more than 54 inches above the cement, and taillights can't be higher than 72 inches. Turn-signal lights can't exceed 83 inches. More info.

it is? go buy something old and give er hell!

Provides that the suspension system or the height of the front and/or rear bumper of a pickup truck should not be modified in excess of three inches from the original manufacturer's design.

I had 2 jeeps both with 8"'s of lift and 35x14.50 tires never got a second look from a cop. Thats about as high as you can go with a jeep without a SOA conversion and some really deep springs.

im going with 42's, GM 12 bolt up front and 14 bolt out back, possibly F-250 or 350 (thats what im looking into right now i may end up with something else) rear springs all the way around arched to about a foot of lift. id rather have leaf springs unless i went with full C/O 4 link but im not that rich haha

holy crap that ride must have been horrible! heck im about wheeling but a 8 inch lift while still have SUA? dang thats nuts..........now the nice thing would be is to get a FJ40 and make it a 4-link with ARB's and some trail pinstripes!

No more than 6" measured at the frame, this includes the extra height of bigger tires... Although nobody seems to check it. But I don't see too many trucks around here with more than a 6" kit but have bigger tires or use a suspension lift and body lift.

No such thing as a GM 12 bolt front axle. Only axle GM ever made for the front was a GM Corporate 10 bolts, the 73-76 or so trucks used a D44 in the front and a 12 bolt rear up to 79. The 3/4 ton trucks had HD D44 axles and 14 bolt rears, while the 1-tons has D60 fronts and 14 bolt full floater rears.

A 12 bolt GM Axle won't live with 42's, max is about 35's, your going to need a Dana 60 in the front for 42's and a 14 bolt rear or D70.

damn dude, you know your ****...i know there wasnt a 12 bolt front but saw somewhere where it wasnt too hard to modify those axles. idk what it was/where it was but something about them it was easier to offset the diff. than most axles. now whether its true or not is a different story. now that i know about this 1 ton with the D60 and full floater..i may end up with a set of those. that sounds like the way to go right there and being a 1 ton truck...they will hold about whatever i can throw at them, within reason of course. TO THE JUNK YARD!

I know a thing or two about chevy crap, I know almost everything there is to know about what came on chevy trucks and how to work on them, I can fix anything except I never worked on differentials.

I have rebuilt a 700r4 automatic transmission though, and its going on 10k miles now with no problems.

Don't get shocked on how much a D60 front diff goes for, all the wheelers who run big tires want them, so the going price is probably around 1k bucks and its going to need work.

I'v never seen a 12 bolt converted to a front axle, that would be interesting.

i actually think i have a few axles lined up. i know many people that used to be BIG into wheelin now they just have crap sittin around so i can probably get them fairly cheap

look like their close to 38s I think. Always hard to tell in the pictures.

I like to keep my rigs sitting low for lower center of gravity, I like rock crawling over mud slinging, so lower the better and the bigger the tires the better.

It has 38.5 boggers, I don't like muddin' either. I use it to do a little rock crawlin'.

im not much into the rock crawling deal. too easy to smash a drive shaft, body panel, anything of this sort. im not too down with that unless i had a purpose built buggy. id rather rock the fat tires and go get stuck in the hole. we do a lot of urban wheeling as well  thats the most fun! that place in the last pic looks pretty gnarly where is that?

They actually handled and rode really nice its all in how you set up your steering. I had 4.5 rubicon express springs the spring rate was very soft. I had a 2 inch body lift which I hate to admit but had to install because of the amount of articulation I had. And 1.75" shackles. If you know what your doing i wont handle like crap. All the horror stories I hear about handling come from guys running SOA and didnt know how to set it uphttp://my-rides.com/pics/77_36

I sure do!

This is my truck on rocky mountain, I didn't try the harder lines, I didn't have rocker protection and my gas tanks are side saddle tanks

but I didn't hardly spin a tire there, and went up the far right line on daniel and had to stack rocks in order to get my rear diff over a rock, was running my 33x12.5" Timberline M/Ts at 17 psi I think and they did pretty good, open diffs basically too, had a gov-loc in the rear but its missing a few teeth now :p

Thats Uwharrie National Forest down in Troy, NC. Thats just about the only hard trail for a built rig other than Daniel, its pretty mild compared to some of the stuff i'v seen.

UNF is a fun place to take a Saturday ride, but there are not any hard lines there for me. I like it when it's wet, because the slippery as snot clay makes it challenging in places.

I blew a bead in that mudhole you posted a pic of, back shortly after I got my truck running it had 31x10.5" tires on it mounted on 15x10" wheels, the previous owner did it

I also bent my tranny crossmember badly because I didn't have enough belly clearance and hit it on a rock while cruising down the trail, after that trip I went back with a 4" spring lift, and 33x12.5" tires mounted on 15x8 wheels. No more trouble then! I was running 20psi in the 31s too, blew the stupid bead TWICE in one day.

You would love the method we used to re-set the bead

Nice ride Wyndzer! That's what I'm looking to build if I can find one for a good price. Here in WV it's 31" to the bottom of the rear bumper and if you don't have a bumper (ie: rollpan) they measure to the bottom of your frame rails. There's been alot of trucks running around here dropping some lift or just selling all together. Sux
