ok so when in riding the quad feels fine up till 3rd and then when you hit 3rd it sounds like the clutch i slippin and i lose all power and on hill it will literaly com to a stop in gear and just sit there in 3rd untill you let off the gas and then it will grab a little then either back to second or to4th of coast back down the hill.

sounds like tranny to me but on a 400ex give me a break

2 stroke dirtbikes have this problem, on them 3rd gear is the most abused gear. Your shift forks may be bent, or the engagement dogs on the gear may be worn. Ive never been into my 400's tranny, so...... it may be a different engagement system????? For the 2 zippers, this would cost like 300-500 to fix unfortunetly. I hope its something easy or cheap for your sake.

Yeah I agree, could be the shift fork... On the 400ex, the first gear to go is usually second gear... I know alot of people who have trashed 2nd gear in their 400's. Other than that, the 400 bottom end is pretty solid!

I imagine second takes the biggest hit because its the first shift and takes a lot of power because your still moving slow and people tend to try and bark it when they shift too so it gets a good shock of torque, and if you are trying to bark tires or whatever on asphalt with HIGH traction your basically signing the transmissions death warrant lol.

buddy what not

my buddy has had to rebuild his tranny twice in his 440 stroker. he does alot of flat-trackin and we found out that in a race he only uses the clutch taking off :eek2: guess that could have something to do with it:devil:

Best bet is to replace all the bearings in the bottom end. If it was me I would by all my transmission parts off Ebay. Gears are around 30+ dollars apiece through Service Honda probably. Best bet is to get a manual and check the specs on everything when you put it back together. You might get lucky and only have to replace 3rd gear, just gotta look and see.

If it would cost 300 to 500 hundred (like madmax said) wouldnt it just be cheaper to buy a bottom end or am i crazy?

i dont think your crazy about buying a bottom end. I just bought a 465 stroker for my bros quad for 500 shipped. came with everything, starter and all.

I blow second and 3rd in my 400ex. It a commom problem i would think 3rd gears is the most abused gear. most poeple are in 2nd when the kill the gas but then they shift into 3rd wide open.

You can have the gears back cut and shimmed for more engagement. I had this done by FDO on my 493 stroker, The shifts are faster and a lot firmer.
