View Full Version : halogen bulb for 400EX

I have been searching this site for months now hoping to come up with a replacement bulb for the headlights on my 400Ex. I did not want to take away from the original appearance of the quad . On some other posts, there was mention of using an h-3 bulb out of an automobile fog light. One, it is not the same base, two, it is not dual filament for high and low beams. After researching I found that a bulb out of another Honda motorcycle fit perfectly. Not only does it fit perfectly, but it is halogen and only 5 watts (on low beam and 6.5 watts on high) more than the stock bulbs. You might wonder why I would go through the trouble of installing these bulbs for only 5 watts difference. The stock bulbs are incandescent and halogen bulbs produce about 33% more light than an incandescent bulb per watt. Thus I am getting nearly double the output with only a 10-13 watt load increase. I checked with my local dealer to confirm my stator would handle the additional wattage and he confirmed that it was the same stator output as the bike the bulbs were originally from. If you are interested the Honda part# is 34901-GJ1-003

That sounds like to coolest thing. So you can run the new bulbs and it won't run down your battery? And the they fit right in like the stock ones? that cool.

they work awsome at night, i don t have them in my 400 but in my parents ML 320 (Benz) and night driving is a lot safer and brighter. also pending on which ones you buy they seem to go out farther as well. Defintly worth the money, we spent $500 on them well worth it !!!

The lights that NORCALATVER is talking about are $17 and some change at Service Honda... Normal price is $21. So that calculates to be about $25 or $30 a piece at your local dealer!!
But if you do alot of night riding that isn't a bad price compared to aftermarket lights!

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I have not been getting e-mail regarding this topic. The bulbs are out of an older trx 350 4x4 quad. The bulbs are out of the single headlight that mounts on the bars. That quad had four headlights as standard. One spotlight (on the front rack), one headlight on the bars, and two molded in to the lower front plastic fenders.
