Yea Mudd, he had Austoesarcoma (sp) A form of cancer that attacks middle aged, to older dogs. Mostly large breeds. But he was so young, not even two, so far from middle aged. He hadn't eaten since Saturday, and Monday night was very bad so he needed to be put to rest. I couldn't stand seeing him like that any longer..

it is strange that he got it so young. but you did what you thought was the best thing for him and that's what counts.;) i think my granny's wired-hair terrier had that, but he was 17 years old.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. My rottwieler had the same thing and it was not very nice to him. very common disease in dogs. Beleive me he is in a much better place than the one he was in if it got that bad.

Just know this: you did exactly what you needed to do for your freind:(

Thank you for your very kind words, Mudd, and Hammer and Pappy. That is a very nasty disease. The vet said due to him being so young, that it makes the cancer much more aggressive for some reason. Took to him to West Chester, Pa. and had them look at him. They said they could do Chemo, however, chemo doesn't seem to help with where the cyst was. It was on his rib cage.. Its very tough, he was part of my family.. I'm sorry for you alls' loses as well... J.C.

Sorry to hear that man. It is always tough to put down a pet. All you can do is give them the best life you can while their here.

aww im so sorry! I love labs, and i know how much they become attatched to you- which makes losing them even harder. My 7 month old labradoodle's kidneys failed yesterday, thankfully she made it, but i was feeling like you are today...Hang in there bud. I know he'll be hard to replace, but do you plan on getting another dog? If so, i would only wait about a week because it will help you get over your loss faster than if you waited a long time.

Thanks for the concern in your time of loss...she's fine, but she was diagnosed with Addison's disease...she just needs a monthly shot to control it.

My advice if you decide to get a new dog: If you get another lab (what we did after our yellow died), dont get another black one. Get a chocolate or a yellow. The personalities of the other colors are completely different- and you'll grow to love the new one in a new way. That way you'll be able to keep Axel's memory unique and special. Its really sad to see a doggie go that young. My chocolate is about that old, i couldnt imagine losing her. Stay strong!

Sorry to hear about this . It was the hardest thing I had to do , when we put our 18 year old American Spaniel down . I knew it was comming , but I never thought it would have been so hard . It took us 3 years before we decided to get another dog , and it's been the best thing we ever did .

Yea, that pic was when he was about 4 months old. I think he was only around 45 or 50 lbs there. Right before he got sick, he was sitting pretty good around 85-90.

I know Rico, it sucked dude.. By the way, how are things going over your way? We are going to wait on getting another one for right now. If feels weird, my daily routine has changed. No dog to go let out, not following me around the house.

It's not easy at all Kazpr, but just enjoy everday that you have them around..

That sucks, I remember when I had to put my 12 yr old german shorthair down. Believe it or not, one of the best things to make ya feel better is to get another dog after a month or so. I picked up homer (another male shorthair) a while later. He won't replace the old one, but will remind ya of the one you had. And be unique in his own way.

That's whay everyone is saying 86350x... I just think it would be really hard for some reason right now.. A buddy of mine has a Chocolate, and I went over there to his house the night we put Axel to rest. I don't think his dog has ever given me that much attention.. It was like she knew or something... Thanks alot Kwatts... :(

12-02-2004, 12:41 PM
Another biproduct of dog breeding, im assuming. I hate it when peoples dogs are sick, and they try to hold on to them until they finally die. You did the right thing by not putting him through hell. I know how it is to have a bond with your dog and i dont know what id do if i lost him, they truly are family members. Get a new buddy, but dont forget what you had with the last one.

I swear dogs can tell when something is wrong ..... they aren't dumb . The other night when I came back from the hospital after screwing up my ankle pretty good .... my dog knew something was wrong . Instead of jumping up on me like he usually does , he just came beside me and followed me into my room and layed his head on my leg . He knew something was up .

Like others have said .... you did make the right decision by putting him in a better place . The thing that breaks my heart the most , is seeing a dog that's in pain and it's owners do nothing to help it .

After a couple of months you should get yourself another one. Everything will be better again. Homer is great, hunts almost as good as Rusty. One bad thing is that he tears stuff up, and steals food off of the counter. Ate 3 loafs of bread the other day:mad:

Lol, oh well gives ya something to laugh at. :p

YLW400
12-03-2004, 05:53 AM
You're right quad, they can sense stuff like that...

Stuff like that cracks me up 86.. I would be sitting on the recliner at home, with my feet up, and Axel would walk over to me, and jump up in the chair on top of me..lol 90 lbs of dog jumping up there. He actually flipped the chair back with me in it once..lol
