anyone?

i went hunting for a helmet today and one of the bike shops i visited has a 400ex. in good condition except the original owner blew the tranny chirping gears on the road. the guy brought it in for repairs and just decided "F it" and left the bike with the shop owner. according to the guy he has it in the back covered in boxes. him being a dirtbike rider, he hasnt had much umph to fix the quad he wont use.

i was thinking of offering him like 500-700 bucks for it. what do you think?

if you can get it for that much then go for it. as far as rebuilding the tranny, i wouldnt mess with doin that, theres a lot of gears, bearings, shifter paws, shifter drums, and other bs to do and it can get expensive buyin all the parts, and can be a pain in the arse to do the work. you shouldnt have any trouble finding a complete lower end for another few hundred, then you could put the top end off that motor on there and have a running 400 for about a grand altogether, depending on how much you give him for it.

Watch EBAY, and on some occasion, this site in the classified area. Both are a good source for parts.

Well.... if your mechanically inclined and want to learn something yourself, me and my friend just got done replacing all the bearings in his dirtbike tranny. It's really not as hard as you all say IMO, the worst part is cracking the case apart, and also getting everything alined and such when you put the cases back together. And we're only 16yrs old. Well if you do decide to do it yourself, I'd be happy to give you a few tips, PM if intrested.-darren

BTW- Yes his dirtbike ended up working out great.

if u get a 400ex full manual, it will tell u how to take it apart and put it back together step by step. THe manuals are quite useful

Get the factory honda manual, not the clymer one. I have the honda one for my 400ex and a clymer for my fiancee's 300ex, and the factory manuals are much easier to use.
