View Full Version : 11.1 compression do i need to run race gas?

i am looking to keep my stock bore and put in either a wiesco or ross or JE pitson in? if its wiesco i was going to go with 11.1 if it was JE it would either be 10.8 or 11.1 but i would like to know if i can run 11.1 compression on 93 octane.

you can run 87 if you want to.. I used to whenever I had no other choice... Heck i took out the new motor I have now, and ran 92 w/ octane booster..and it ran fine till it got a little warm in the woods, but other than that, in the flat with the air pushin across the motor, its fine..

I have a 426 11:01 comp. if i run race gas 110 oct my bike runs like sh*#. If I run 93 it runs great. I am having some carb problems now though so it dont wanna run it all.:D

it runs like sh*t because race gas burns slower you will need to rejet your carb each time you switch between race gas and regular 93 fuel

I say youll want to do a 50/50 mix at least.... even with that compression. Running it on lower octane increases the risk of detonation and running high temperatures... I would be safe and run 50/50 premium pump with 110 race gas. My 426 used to have 11.5/1 compression before I went to the 12:1, and pump gas wasnt even an option whatsoever at .5 more than what you are running...Significant deonation and super high temps...

This is a little known fact but an I/C engine will run at its best when ran on the lowest octane possible without detonation. If 400 EX's were liquid cooled, it would run good at even 12.5:1 on 93 octane. So there for, the conditions you ride in (hot or cold) can play a major role in needed octane. But with 11.0:1 I wouldnt even consider race fuel unless you were riding in the desert or you have an oil flow problem, then youll have problems regardless.

how bout 93 octane gas with that booser crap(does that really work) and a oversized oil tank,a oil cooler that is molycoated to help keep temps down as well,will i be able to run straight gas then in a 11:1?

If i understood him correctly if you had all that done then you would have less of a need for race fuel than before you did all the upgrades to keep it cooler.

yes i have a oversized oil tank,i just bought a pil cooler that was molycoated by paps,and plan on running 93 or 94 octance,so i should be ok,and i think im going to get w/e internals molycoated as well,camshaft,piston,rings etc IF i could,i know that you could wiht the piston though

call me crazy...but I run 90(highest octane at the pumps) and I have 0 heating or detination problems.

You should be fine. Look into the "Have You Decked that Cylinder" thread in the FAQ.... some good stuff! You can help yourself out a lot by putting the right head and base gaskets on it.... plus the advertised compression is no where near what you think it is without the gasket changes. I went with some mild porting and a XR cam at the same time... I love mine!
