Found this on a site thought i would share it with everyone here . sorry to long have to put it on another page

SAN DIEGO -- Trauma experts at Children's Hospital asked parents Tuesday to keep children under 16 off all-terrain vehicles.

Children shouldn't ride the ATVs under any circumstances, even if the vehicle's engine is a small 90 cubic centimeters, even if they take safety courses and even if their wear helmets and other protective equipment, doctors told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"It's all about the life-threatening and life-injuring head and cervical spine injuries and the broken bones," Dr. Susan Duthie, a pediatric intensive-care specialist at Children's Hospital, told the newspaper.

Despite safety measures, "these bikes are very powerful, they're very heavy and they go very fast," she told the Union-Tribune. "We hear the parents say, 'I did everything I could do.' Maybe the best thing they could have done was not have their child on that ATV."

In the past 11 months, 117 children under age 16 riding ATVs in desert areas were taken by helicopter or ambulance to Children's Hospital with severe injuries, the newspaper reported. Since 2000, Children's has received an average of 67 such patients each year.

Nationally, the number of injuries and deaths from all-terrain vehicles has grown steadily, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Emergency room visits for children under 16 rose from 19,300 in 1995 to 37,100 in 2002.

In California, people under 18 must take a safety course or be under the direct supervision of an adult who has a safety certificate in his or her possession. Children 13 or younger aren't allowed to operate an ATV without supervision from a parent or guardian.

i know a 7 year old that raced his 90cc atv an entire season...not 1 injury. yet while riding his pedal bike at home he wrecked and it did severe damage.

ride and have fun and assume the risks of living free

Its really just a matter of time before a crash!!!! But you gotta live! If you sit on the couch (where its safe  ) you'll die of obesity! :eek2:

What really burns my butt is, of those statistics, how many were cases where the parents were not supervising, making the kids where the proper gear and following the general ATV rules! :scary:

I completely agree. I have been riding since I could walk and racing since I was 8 yo. I have had MANY crashes, but I had all the proper gear on! If you are going to spend money on a quad, then why can't you spend the money on safety too!?!?

So it's okay for lil kids to ride dirtbikes but not ATVs?? WTF!?! I've wrecked a couple times and got hurt but kinda like Pappy said... riding a bike, swinging on a swing set, or even walking down the street can be just as dangerous.

a few years ago a 18 year lod kid got his neck broke riding on a ATV. the local news ran a story on that for four days stirate . a week later the paper had a small story on it. truns out the kid was playing chicken with his friends on the ATV. So who's falt was it? Not the ATV's.

I like how they said that the injuries have been growing steadily, but they fail to mention that the atv sales has been growing very rapidly. I guess there will always be somone that has a problem with things like these. I say screw them. Let them raise their own kids. I'll raise mine....when I decide to have children. Be prepared for a new warning label on the new atvs. It will be a surgeon general's warning:rolleyes:

Guess they would rather see the kids out doing drugs. My son is 14 and he can ride my 400, I hope to get him his own for his 15th b-day in feb. I think i'll take my chances with the atv's rather then other stuff he could be getting into.

Life is full of risks, without risks life is boring. If you ride a quad you are taking a chance at any age. The govorment is trying to control us way too much. If that parent decides to take the risk of letting their child ride an ATV then that is the parents choice.

Hmm... maybe we should ride around in 10 foot diameter bubbles so we will all be safe  . Come on.. whats life about these days. I think we all have to have fun and stuff happens... you deal with it. Its a horrible thing when deaths happen but its either somekind of rider mistake. Just like guns don't kill people, people kill people. Atv's dont hurt people... Then they wonder why the US is obese. Soon they will be saying that golf is too dangerous

As said before, life is full of danger, might as well enjoy it. I go out and ride, but i always wear protective gear. I have never broken a bone, never had a life threatening crash, i have had a few wipe outs from time to time, but you get that. Id rather Die doing something i love, then Die doing nothing at all.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is why we are into ATV's & racing to keep the kids out of trouble. God knows what they would be doing if they didn't race, I know some of my friends' kids that DON'T race & all they do is get into trouble :(
My boys have both crashed the older one much harder BUT nothing serious (knock on wood) they always wear their gear!! I really CAN'T IMAGINE not doing what we do because of what a Dr. says   My Dr. looks @ us funny when he found out my 5 yr old races but he surely did not say don't let him! Arrrr this just makes me mad when I hear things like this!!

Well if the doctors looked at it this way they would be poor... What gets physical therapists/sports doctors alot of their money?..?.. Racing of any type/riding/high school sports. When I went to a dr. like that he said racing/riding/football was dangerous and he didnt advise that i do anything. But he made a boat load of money offa me. Each visit was like 95 bucks (not including my knee brace or emergency room/x-rays) all of those doctors are rolling in the money from all of us that have been hurt. Me and my brother have both been there. They would be piss poor if people didnt do anything that they could get hurt at. :ermm:

I agree with geogeorge, if you crash a quad or dirt bike then it's your falt, never the quad's falt, the quad only does what you want it to do, it doesn't choose to play chicken, you choose to play chicken, these doctors just don't get it.

I think that doctors should be lucky that we wreck, I know from just a few ppl in my area that have spent thousands of$'s in medical bills!
I hate watching a freind/ or anyone wreck, But its gona happen. I agree with Pappy i have been hurt alot worse on my own bike.
I ride with a guy from my town, that before he had a quad, and became ADDICTED to the EX's he was running with the wronge people, and SLANGIn all sorts of drugs and doing almost whatever else u could imagin. He went out and bought a Shee, cuz thats what they had on Biker Boys, But he sold that and bought a 400ex and ever since He has been staright laced!
He bought that quad, and got out of slangin/doing drugs, and just rides all the time.
People can say whatever they want bad about ATV's but i know as well as my buddie that if it wasnt 4 his ATV ADDICTION he would more than likely be dead or in jail!

I had one of the quys that works for me do some research and here are just some interesting fact:

150,000 people go to the hospital in just the month of December from falling off ladders, puttin up christmas lights.

MX injuries are way down the list on sports injuries. Swimming/diving, football, and extreme skakeboarding and roller blading are on top of the list.

Also, an emergency room doctor was interviewed about these injuries and in the interview they found out that the doc rode dirtbikes. The person doing the interview asked the doc "why would you ride a dirtbike when you treat people who get hurt on these bikes"? The doc said "because riding is too much fun".

There are so many things that have more "serious injuries" than riding. But, for some reason it is so easy to point the finger at riding dirtbikes or atv's. And, ATV's gets most of the attention. Its easy for us ATV'ers to say "the hell with you people who do not like riding" but, what we must do is try very hard to educate all riders to ride smart and be as safe as possible. Also, make sure that young riders know how to ride within their limits. Its usually the kid thats not being properly supervised that gets hurt.

Anything can happend at anytime. But remember, we are being watched every move that we make.

Another good thing to do is everyone needs to get these people that watch us to focus their attention somewhere else. Somehow we need them to see these results of other sports injuries that are higher on the list than riding.

I am going to stop now before I start rambling on. Hope this helps someone at sometime.

God Bless America

This is just the standard politically correct crap doctors have to say to the public. I'm 32 and my doctor told me after my last wreck that "officially, on the record" he wants me to stop riding atvs and my 15 year medical record shows I can't keep it wheels down! He then said that if I had a hairline fracture on my pelvis I could be paralyzed if it took another hit before it was healed.

His next advice "off the record" was to have it x-rayed and if they turned out ok then let'er rip in about two weeks! He then pointed me in the right direction for advise on sports nutrition and training for next years GNCC season. He would never admit publically the things he said in private. It's just the way doctors have to operate in this worls of law suits and lawyer greed.

since kids under 16 cant ride quads..or anything like that.. i say that doctors should not let kids under 16 walk 2 feet in front of them..or they might get head injuries...:o ..

My Son is nine and he has been riding CRF50 since April 04, he fell a couple of times, now he is more cautious and think before he does something that will eventually hurt if he crashes, (stupid hurts) anyway, today I let him try my Wife new 05 TRX250EX with me on the back, he is not ready to go by his self yet, he has to get used to the thumb throttle from the twist he got used to, but after awhile he will either get the 250 or something close to it he has to learn, and parents have to teach them whatever age. OK I’m done now.

its because of irresponsible parents. like someone else said the sales of atv's are increasing faster than the injuries so quads are getting safer technically. and i read in dirt wheels that more than twice as many kids drown in pools, why dont they make swimming illegal? i think its dumb and the idiots punish us all:rolleyes:

thats bs, with proper training and supervision there is no problem. I started riding when i was 3 and a half on a kitty kat then in the summer my dad got me a honda 70 something. To this date i have never gotton a bad injury from quads or snowmobiles (knock on wood)

I think doctors should issue a warning against stupid parents. That seems to be the root cause of most all ATV injuries.
