ask cleanshave400ex about motor work, he bought a 440 and blew 2 head gaskets already. i would leave the piston and bore factory cause honda puts it together the best. you wanted my opinion, buy a 450r if ya need more power

id get a lsr frame and crf motor and run it

400ex frame will not stand up to a crf, you can get a jb kit and it will last you a half season, to do it right you need something stronger get the lsr, use your swingarm machine it down , put the crf motor on it bolt your stuff up and go

HI,I have a yz450f motor in my 400ex chassis w/gusset frame and it holds up fine .I never had no prob with it...Just make sure if ya do do it ,do it right i have seen alot of hacked motors(crf's,yz450's,etc)installed where they have been butchered together..Go to a reliable source on witch ever motor you go with for gussets, and all the degrees on how everything should be installed.....and all the other good stuff..I am a good rider at least i want to say (lol)and this bike treated me very well.with this set up it is a very easy machine to ride and handle..http://www.infinity2k.com/_eddie/picture012.jpg

Second,i thinnk if ya go with a 400ex motor, instead of spending all that money on doing it ,buy 1 that is done.. obviously make sure its in great working order..you can get a good used motor i think for around maybe 750-900bucks complete w/carb and all the goodies rather than takin it in spending alot more..if i were you i would try to find a 426 motor ..anyway that is just "ME"speakin garbage given my 2cents...good luck Here is my old 440
