4 speed eh? Does it pull better or what?

actual horsepower would be the same no matter the tranny, but 4 speed has a much wider gear ratio that is awesome for motocross. think about never leaving 2nd gear on your way to the first corner!

the 4 speed gearing is exactly the same inside as the yfz's 2-5. its simply a yfz tranny without the low low first gear. I have one and i really like it.

These motors would be good to put in a YFZ also, everyone is converting them to kickstart and stroking them, migth as well get a YZ450 and have the stock YFZ motor as a spare.

its not just like taking out the 1st gear, the gears are spread out much longer so theres no need for 5 gears. every gear in the 4 speed gearbox is completely different than the 426 and wr450f 5 speed.

yes the gears are different than the yz426 and wr450, they are the same as a yfz tranny 2nd through 5th gear

lol.. no man, they are quite a bit different. the 4 speed is a wide ratio, and every gear is completely different than the yfz or any other yamaha motor. it IS possible to swap trannys though if thats what you mean.

check out the part microfiche's though if you dont beleive me.
thanks for tryin to help though! ;)

hey man, check out this thread comparing the ratios. id say they are pretty similiar to me. http://www.yfzcentral.com/invision/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=5239&hl=gear+ratios&

yeah, i see the ratios are the same. what im saying is that its not the same tranny minus 1st gear. something is changed to make up for the low gear, otherwise the 4 speed motor would have no torque at the very bottom of first gear. im no transmition expert so i'm not trying to start an arguement, im just tryin to sell my motor!

hey, i was wondering if you would be interested in a trade for the 426 motor. say a 1987 polaris cyclone thats ICE oval ready/TT ready. or a 1977 chrysler new yorker 440 brougham Hot Rod:devil: . its got new black metallic paint and laker straight side pipes. I have pics of both. thanks for your time, Andrew

Man I dont know if you know what you are talkin about, you said you see that the gear ratios are the same and you still say they have differant ratios??? Kinda sounds like you are arguing with your self, the only differance between the 4 speed and the 5 speed is the missing 1st gear in the 4 speed. all the gear ratios are the same, now if they change the sproket size maybe to get it more low end I dont know.

from someone who does know what they are talking about since none of us do:

" couldn't find any info on the ratios for the quad, but to answer one of your questions yes, a "combination" makes up the final ratio.

I'm sure you understand the affect the final gearing (sprocket combination) will have, but there is also the primary ratio, this is the gear ratio between the crankshaft and main transmission shaft. I wouldn't be surprised if the quad has a different primary ratio (of course it also has a different final ratio also).

The primary ratio on the '03-'04 YZ 450 is 62/22, that is the transmission is slowed down by this factor (22 teeth on the crank drive 62 teeth on the clutch basket). They changed the '05's YZF 450's primary ratio by one tooth, I think it is one tooth taller but I forget...

Hope this helps somewhat. Do a search on this topic as I believe this has been discussed here before (quad tranny vs. the YZ)."

Hehe that damn primary and seconday ratio :D .

To all those who were arguing

Well good lucking selling the motors, I know the TC motor hauls and the 450 does also, sucks you had to go through all this b/s just to sell motors :ermm:

I didn't wanna start a big back and forth thing, I just took a lot of crap when i first built mine that i was insane to build a quad with a 4 speed, so i did the research and found that the tranny ratios were the same. I just wanted to clear some stuff up to show this is a great engine for a quad and so that people would not be intimidated by the fact that it only has 4 gears. If i had the cash id buy it as a spare cause i love this motor that much. good luck sellin. Mike
