The 250R rear shock does not work on a 400ex. The fronts however will.

Is there a nice improvement with the stock front shocks, and do they bolt right up?

What about the stock rear trx450R shock, do they bolt right up to a 400ex?

i just want a better ride without buying aftermarket shocks!

using a stock shock from another quad may be a cheap fix, but it will eventually give you some problems after time and use. I'd just try to save up for some works that are made to fit both a quad and its rider...thats gonnna be your cheapest solution

No, the 450R shock will not work. There are no stock shocks that will bolt up and work better than the stock 400ex shocks. Some will tell you that Cannondale front shocks will work but, they are the wrong stroke and you actually loose travel.

HEY JEFF! What's the diff. between the 400ex shock and 250R? I just pulled a Works shock off a 400ex that the rider was complaining about. Lay it next to a 250R shock, and they are the same. My guess is that someone put a 250R shock on this 400ex. Looks like the shock is too long for the 400ex. Set ride height to where it should be, and you got maybe an inch of shock shaft showing.

The stock 250R front shocks have progressive rate springs and are sprung a little lighter. The stock 250R front shocks are also about 1/4" longer then the stock 400ex shocks.
With the aftermarket shocks, they are built to the same length but have slightly different valving and spring rates.
