ok i have a 2000 400ex...1st thing: jetting-it has a yoshi rs-3 slip on, and the guy went up one size on the main jet...if take this off and sell it, will i need to rejet again or will i be ok, and if i do have to rejet, can i buy a filter instead and will it even out?..... 2nd thing:cam- im bringing my quad to the shop soon for a tune-up and valves adjusted, should i get the cam then have them do everything or have them do it then put the cam in myself, because idk how to adjust the timing but i wouldnt mind learning, but dont want to bring it back to the shop to have them re-do it...3rd thing: piston-im gonna be putting in a 11:1 piston, will i need to do anything else at the same time with this or just the piston

thanks

1) Jetting, yes, if you change pipes from stock to aftermarket or vice-versa jetting has to be revised.
2)Most definatly install the cam before you pay for a valve adjustment, adjusting the valves is part of the cam instalation process.
3)Make sure you do the cam and piston install at the same time, a hi-comp piston is worthless with out a higher performance cam, and vice-versa.

When you get ready to buy your cam/piston give us a call, we carry them and like this reply have helpful advice to go with the sale.

but with the jetting, if i put an aftermarket filter on instead, would i still have to rejet

well, it depends on a few circumstances, yes it will help, but its like dumping more oil into an engine burning it..........it makes more sence to fix the problem rather than by-passing it. a 400ex is dirt simple to make main jet chenges, you could probably do that faster than repalceing the air filter anyway.

an aftermarket filter will give more power though, which i want anyway....so, not to ignore your suggestions but my thought is that, if i alrdy have added hp from my pipe, and put my stock back on, ill lose hp right? then ill have to re-jet too....but if i put on an aftermarket filter, i will gain some of the hp back, and not have to re-jet...idk if you were understanding my thinking or if i am just a complete dumbass lol

the ex along with most other hondas only have one cam, the intake and exhaust lobes are on the one cam for these engines.
the picture you saw was more than likely cams for the yamaha or something and the pic. was under the wrong cam.

i have a stage 1 hotcam forsale if your interested. it will save you some cash. it is in really good shape with nothing wrong. i am just not using it so it isn't needed anymore. yes, the 400ex only has one cam. the z400's and kfx's have 2 though.

I'd say buy Cals400ex's cam. He's well-known person on this site and won't screw you over.

As for the filter question, no filter adds that much power. You will still have to rejet after putting on a different filter and taking off the pipe, unless you take your airbox lid off...then it MIGHT even out.

ok well i think im gonna go with a 10.1:1 piston...what gas would i use with that? and also, what else would i have to do when i put that in? what about when i put in a hotcam stage 1?

You won't need any higher octane gas, just use the usual Premium gas (92-94).

You don't need to rejet when putting in a higher comp piston but I don't know about the race cam...

my jetting changed about 1 mainjet size going from stock to a 10.6:1 406 and stage 2 hotcam. so, the jetting won't change much but i would always check it.

i ran a keihin 155 with my stock motor but i had a sparks pipe on it. with the piston and cam, i went up to a keihin 158.

ok so if i put in a 10.1:1 piston what else will i have to do with it as far as gaskets and whatever

if all your putting in there is the piston then you just need the base gasket and head gasket, may want to get new header o-ring gaskets too.
i would get the cylinder honed before i put in the new piston and rings.
