well, i havent been happy with the finish on my 11-87 since i bought it 2 years ago.

about 2 weeks ago i slipped out for some squirrell huntin and when i got back in i forgot to wipe the firearm down (dad on life support so i have an excuse:p )

anyway, i decided to refinsh the shotgun, starting with the reciever. you can see the barrel and thats pretty much what the reciever used to look like also:mad:

Pappy
11-18-2004, 01:26 PM
lol no i didnt invent it.

i started doing molycoating and found this process also. its still a form of moly ..or i can use teflon based coating.

they offer 14 different colors but so far matt black has been the easiest. ill try up some other colors on a few race guns i have.

JDiablo
11-18-2004, 01:27 PM
what other colors are avaliable pappy?

Pappy
11-18-2004, 01:28 PM

gloss black, matt black, red, blue, silver, matt silver, olive drab, and now gun blue color which i cant wait to try out on one of my carry guns...its a bit wore down:p

It sort of looks like the parkerizing that comes on the express's

how durable is it???

Pappy
11-18-2004, 01:30 PM
yes its very similiar to the factory finish but a bit higher quality (or so i hope..lol)

the factory finish rusts if you look at it, this stuff is supposed to hold up and passed the 500 hour salt spray test. (hell of a note, ill spray it down with water and let her sit for a few days to see:eek: )

impact resistance blows away any normal coating so it should be pretty tuff

well pappy im going to have to make a list of "high wear" parts to send to you to try out the diffrent colors if you get them:D

Damn PAP I wish you would of had that a few weeks ago. I sold my 870 wingmaster slug gun and spent a boookooo of cash on a berreta for deer season. If you would have had that I would have just coated the 870 and kept it. It was beyond blueing (someone got silicone on it and it just would not take blueing anymore) so that would have been a good option.

So you gonna let us in on what this stuff is? is it sprayed like powder or paint. Baked...?

JDiablo
11-18-2004, 03:01 PM
i have some parts done alreayd in this,it is a very very thin paint like substance that pappy said needs a curing time ,i forgot how much it is,and no need to worry about messing up threads and what not,i think paps siad it goes on .004 inches or something:eek2:

Pappy
11-18-2004, 03:24 PM
its a dry film lubricant thats sprayed as a liquid over prepped metal. its then cured at 325 for an hour

sounds very cool, and perfect for my temperature ranges. You gonna try a frame in it?

Pappy
11-18-2004, 03:37 PM
no its way to expensive for something as large as a frame..atleast for me

nevermind that idea then. Is it up there with chroming?

Pappy
11-18-2004, 03:50 PM
no chrome work is pricey but you get what you pay for.

the expense in this is again, prep work and materials. the actual agent used in the coating is only around $30 a pint

so it wouldnt be worth it for you to do your own frame? I would imagine prep is similar to powerocating and at 30$ a pint it shouldnt be all that expensive.

What am i missing here?

Pappy

there really wouldnt be any benefit over pc on such a large object. this substance/coating is designed for certain things and it does them well. i dont think the appearence would be all that flattering on such a large object, and there really isnt any use for the lubricating qualities associated with this coating. it could be done mind you, but why i cant answer:p

now, on to the other side of this. if you dont have a proper spray booth yer screwed. thus stuff will stick and coat anything it contacts and there isnt any getting it off. then, you have to have a supplied air respirator because certain colors contain lead. its pretty harmless unless you did alot of parts without protection etc. im tested monthly for lead thru work so im good to go:p

for small parts and firearms (im sure there are many many other uses) this stuff seems like the cats meow. time will tell as i beat the snot out of it and see what the real story is:p
