I don't know a lot about the 300ex, but I think that might be a little tough.

best thing u can do is go and buy a c-dale 2 bc the money u would put into ur 300 to keep up would be the same as buyin the c-dale..

Sorry Jim,

Now is this fair. You should not get upset if you get impossible answers to a impossible question.

But to the question of what to do to a 300EX to make it beat a 440 cannondale the best answer I can think of is NOTHING, JUST PLAIN NOTHING.

Unless your friend is the absolute worst rider forget about it, you may as well just accept the fact that the 300 is a fine machine but its only what it is.

I hope you can understand what I am getting at and that this is in no way a flame but go and look at the specs of both machines and think that to be able to bring the 300EX into the same range as the c'dale it would not be a 300EX anymore.

Ive never raced one, so, it would be cool to see.
What Mods do you have on it already?
No offense to anyone, but, most of the time, most people dont race everyday, so why go pay 8K or more for a C-dale, when you can pay 4.something K for a new 300 +1K in mods, and it will be a nice machine. You guys can say whatever, but id still get something that is proven reliable, and runs good.Plus, you can pipe it, bore it,put a 12:1 piston in it, and run Turbo Blue in the gas tank. That should give him some help.I dont know what mods you already have on it, but id recommend do those first.Invest in some good tires if you have stockers.Dont worry about the rims to much if your gettings bigger , or smaller tires, because their aluminum stock. Also, you might want to get a webcam, and last, but not leaset, a diffrent front sprocket. Like 1 tooth bigger on the front. That should help you.

I am pretty sure that a modded 300ex can barely beat a stock 400ex. If the 400 is equally modded, the 300 doesn't have a chance. Its kind of the same way for the 400 and the c-dale. All the 400ex rider can hope for is that the c-dale rider is really bad or c-dale breaks down. You can't do enough to the 300 to beat a c-dale. Sorry.

Dude, I feel your pain, I played with jetboats for years always tryin to be the fastest thing on the water. One day after a thorough wippin, I figured out that no matter how much you spend or how fast you are, somebody is always faster. I ride with a guy who has his 400 modded pretty good,he is faster than me in a straight line but I dont care cause I can whip him in the trails. Just ride your quad and enjoy it until something better comes along. You will feel dumb when your totally modded 300 breaks down and has to be towed home by that dam c-dale.:o

A 330 kit in a 300ex is about equal with a piped 400ex. Starting with a 300, you're already at a disadvantage. I'm not bashing, I have a 300 also, but we have 1986 technology in 2002. If you want to race him on a MX track or drag race, forget it. Best bet is to find the nastiest thickest brush pile you can and race him through that. The only advantage you have is that the 300 is a couple inches narrower.

Otherwise, you're going to spend a lot more than $1500. Start off with the fact that the head came off the 250X. So now it's on a 282cc engine. Then you make it a 330 or 365cc bore, and you still have a 250 head. Port, polish, match ports, bigger valves, springs, retainers, cam, and you have a head to go with your bigger cc engine.
Next, if you go big on the cc's, how long will the stock rod/wrist pin/crank/rod bearings/crank bearings hold up? So do you split the case, add a stroker crank, better rod, better bearings? That's more $$.
Of course you're looking at opening up the intake air flow with filter/airbox mods, and the exhaust side with header and muffler mods.
And when you get the Hp up, now the short swingarm is going to bite you. The 300 is easy to wheelie stock. Add just a 330 kit and you can't keep the front wheels on the ground. So you're going to go with at least a +2 swing arm, which means a new chain as well. And you don't want a new chain running on old sprockets, wearing out the chain prematurely, so there's a $100 at least for the chain and sprockets. And you're going to have to lengthen the rear brake line with the extended swing arm.
With the added power, you're going to exceed the factory suspension's capabilities pretty quick, so shocks are the minimum upgrade you would get by with. Custom Axis front's will run you close to $1500. And another $600 for the rear, since the 300 shocks are not rebuildable from the factory. See how this snowballs? You would end up with a $6k or $7k 300ex. And he would still have a stock c-dale. He could drop a couple hundred into it and be able to beat you again.

Sorry. The 300 is a great machine, but it doesn't whip the bigger machines on the market.

Just enjoy what you have. Improve it as you get the cash, and if you want massive gains, get a bigger machine.

hey jim,
i dont know alot about the 300 but a while back in dirt wheels i saw a article that made the 300 faster than the 400. im at school right now but when i get home ill look through my mag and find it for you and make a list of the stuff you need. it didnt look too much stuff if i remember but the kit made the quad kick a**.:devil

Actually Jim I am still a step below you. When I first got the 250ex people laughed, because I am 27 and ride a quad that 10 year old girls are riding. Well after a while it really got to me. So I was bound and determine to throw dirt in those guys faces. Well I kept doing research and running figures. I actually came up with a with to make a 250ex run like a 400 in a drag race. But for the 7000 or 8000 bucks it would take, what was the point. I would have a very high overly priced quad that needed new rings and a piston about every 3rd ride. So I just got over it, and still got the 250ex, which I still love to ride. Point to all this is Jim, dont matter what you do or what kind you have, someone will always have just a little bit more then your bike does. So what if a 400 has a clutch, and can run 65 or 75. Ill still be there, just takes a little longer. But Im still having fun, my wife on the other hand, I'm driving her nuts with this stuff. Besides I will bet Im gonna have the best looking 250ex around, just not the fastest. NOW ARE YOU GUYS GONNA FEEL SORRY FOR ME AND DONATE ME A 400, PREFERABLY ONE OF THE CHRIS WATERS BIKES, OR A RICO 416 SPECIAL, OR A CHAD 505, YOU BUNCH OF GREENHORNS!:blah

Ummmm...not much you can do. Maybe strap on a tank of NOS with a 390kit (it might be good for 200yards before the engine explodes :D ) .

All and all, its not going to happen. I think Rico's suggestion of wings and rocket boosters would be your best bet. :D

Or chain his quad to a tree when he isn't looking, then race him.

I forgot the most obvious one, race him in reverse. The c-dales don't have reverse do they?

A fully race modded 300ex engine with something like a 350+ big bore kit can maybe reach 35-36hp, but will probably be really "peaky" and it will cost you a terrific amount of money. But if you want to beat him, I just saw some 440 engines on ebay that are at 3000$ right now, maybe you could put one in your quad... :)
