The rider is also a factor.

the rider can make or break the bike. I have a 300 that will beat almost all 400ex but the z still kills it.

My piped(full) 400EX(not my current 416) with holes in the air box lid a 14T sprocket and the correct jetting beat 03' stock Z400's. It ran pretty even with my brothers KFX with his stock exhaust opened up, holes in the airbox lid and jetted.

We did drag races last night(YFZ, KFX, Raptor, Kawasaki 700 and my 416). If the bikes are even close in power it's anyones game.. so much depends on the rider and a good launch.

A good friend of mine has a 03 z-400 stock motor w/ a yoshi slip-on exhaust..When we race, He beats me 3 out of 5 times...I'm a bit bigger than he is and he is a better rider than I am so, ..I can handle beating him only 2 of 5 races............When another buddy races him on my quad, my quad wins most of the time..Both are great quads and it really depends on the rider..But,I still get beat in reverse............ every time.........:D

Go with stock gearing and see what happens......You will have a much bigger lead on them.....14t fronts kill the 400ex in drags.....I suffered a loss to a 300ex because of a 14 tooth front.....Came back with a 15 tooth and smoked him!

I've been wondering the same thing, I had a 99' 400ex with Pro Circuit t-4 exhaust, K&N, and a jet kit and it ran real well. I sold it and bought a bone stock 03' Z400 and my firsth thought were "my old EX would beat this thing in a drag". But after riding it for awhile I realized that there are a couple of differences in these 2 quads that may have a factor in which "seems" faster. The biggest one is the the front end it lighter on the EX, what I mean is it is easier to pull a wheelie than on the Z. This alone will give you a false sense of power. The second being that I think the Z has hidden power. In other words, it has a smoother, broader power band.

This is just my observation and it may be just BS that I am thinking here, but it is just how it seems to me. They are both very much equal in a 1/8 mile stretch and what little difference there is, it isnt much. But stock for stock, I'd have to give it to the Z.

the 400ex i think has more torq and the z has more toped
a 400ex with 22 inch tires is even with the z400 but when the ex has 20 inch the z will pull away in th end

The Z400/KFX400 does have the atvantage of dual overhead cams, giving it much more building potential than the 400ex. Gust's 450 will run with modded YFZ's easily, then his skills do the rest. But the 400ex, is still a great machine IMO, due to the fact the it is so dependable, and Honda allows parts to be ordered online, unlike Suzuki and Kawasaki, which make you go though your dealer for OEM parts.
Also Honda never had the frame problems tha the z/KFX had that are supposedly now cured.

I know you're talking about the 400ex but I've seen and heard of a lot of 450R frames cracking in the same spot.

Man, I can't believe you guys! When my 400EX was stock I could beat them as much as they beat me. Now, with the mods I have, I have no trouble beating piped Zs.................Learn how to ride!:blah:

I was looking at new Z400s, but decided it was too much cash so bought a used 01 400ex, I really liked hondas anyway.

But I think my 400ex is fast enough stock, I don't need anything much faster lol.

And how does putting a taller front sprocket on help it beat a z400? Wouldn't that hurt acceleration? Same with the rear tires, are you just talking about the top speed? Cause I can see where that would matter.

Yeah, I agree. Mine still gives me that thrill on demand. I really have no need for any of the new 450's either.:o

Well.. i dont know if this helps but i have a 440kit installed wiseco 11:1 with FMF PC 4 and i leave Z's in the dust in a drag on the tar.. you gotta be good with the clutch tho to keep the front end down haha.
