If you dont have motor work done already , I would just go to a 450.

I say go all out and bore AND stroke it. But, it depends on how much money you want to pour into the 400 before you can justify the expense of a new 450R.
I personally like the challenge of making a smaller bike/engine hang with the bigger guys, but, if they wanna go faster then they will always have the edge on you, but if you can build yours to keep up with a stock 450R I would say you have done pretty good. And if you bore and stroke the 400 that shouldn't be too much trouble, not to mention the port and polish work and cam your talking about.

upgrade 400 or just move up to a 450?
It really depends on how much you already have done on your 400. I wondered the same question as you now when the 450 started to become available. But I felt I had more invested in my 416. To turn around and buy a 450 and start thinking about upgrading it was too costly.
just my .02 cents

if you dont have alot invested in your 400 sell it and get a 450r. I'm just spending about 800 on my engine to get the bike up to par and practicing alot so i can hang with the newer bikes. I think your driving ability is the most important. i wouldnt go to all the trouble of boring AND stroking. Not very reliable and to much money. 426 or 440 p&p, full exhaust ,cam, CDI should make u competitive.
