im getting a 02 400ex on friday. i want to know if you really should go easy on it through the first tank of gas. i ask this because my father works for the ford motor co. and after they are finished building the truck or a car, they take it to the rollers and open it up from 90-100 mph just wanted to know.

i heard if you break it in like a bear it will run like a bear. thanks

There are as many different answers to this question as there are people answering it!

Personally, I go easy on it for a few tanks of gas.. I don't really "baby" it, but I try to avoid lugging the motor, or riding in situations that may cause the motor to get very hot (tight, slow trails... reall steep hillclimbs.. etc...)

Some folks say to let it idle (I WOULD NOT do that :))..

go out to sparks racings webpage,,he's got a 4 stroke brake in article,,,you outa read it..I don't recommend takin your new 400 out and hammerin down,,you'll run into motor probs later down the line,,with rings not seating properly etc...

My Honda Dealer recommends the 10/20/30 method. You run for 10 mins let it cool, run 20 mins let it cool, run 30 mins let it cool..then from there on out for the first tank 30 mins and let it cool. Also you are never supposed to run it past 75% throttle for the first tank. Anyway not sure if that is the best way but that is what they told me..

Deathbringer has a good way, I'd just add to that to not let it idle.

my friend is a pro nascar engine builder.....he told me to take it easy for a few minutes to make sure the engineis ok....then ride it hard....i just rebuilt my ex (416 kit) i rode it about 6 times for about 5-10 minutes each ride not letting it idle but not over revving the engine....today i took it out and stomped on it...it runs great....i smokes a DS 650 modded and a banshee modded!!!.....nice huh

What happens when you let a fresh new motor idle?

It will seat the rings wrong...or can I should say. You stand to loose psi when you rev it. Up and Down on the throttle is the best way and not over 75% on break in.
