personally...my setup consists of 3 different buffing wheels rigged to an elactric motor with three different polishing compounts...hard,mefium, and soft go from hard to medium then to soft matching the wheels with the compount then when your done hit it with some aluminum polish and you'll be rockin...

places like eastwoods and some others sell different polishing wheels and compounds. I also use three different wheels with 4 different compounds. if the part is really rough like a stock 400ex swingarm sand the part first. if you sand with sandpaper start with as course as need and work down to about 1500 grit before using any polishing compound. all mothers is really good for is bringing back shine after somthing is already polished!

So like the heat shield for instance I would sand it down, rough, medium, then fine. And after the fine grit sanding, what will it look like?? Will it be ready to put some Mothers polish on??

are you talking about a stock 400ex heat shield? you will not need to sand it unless it is really scratched up. I would never use mothers unless the part has already been polished to a chrome like shine then use that to basicly just clean it up. to be done right steel takes a different type of compound than alumn.
