Im trying to remember what Tom told me. i believe they shave where the valves seat at 3 different angles to allow it to flow more air or somthin, dont count on me though i dont know!!!

Thet shave where the valves seat at 3 angles to give a smoother flow so that ratther than just the 45 degree it blends from 30 to 45 to 60 to create less tubulance. My head is getting a 5 angle done right now :)

Very good question. This is what i was taught....
OK, you've seen a valve...your've seen a valve seat (normally flat) ...a 3 angle valve job is simple gringing the valve seat at 3 different angles.
The primary function is to smoothen out the air flow through the intake into the cylinder and create a better seal between the valve and seat. Its very crude, but maybe you can see by the pic i just drew...hope this helps

Thanks for the input guys,,,I'm gonna get my head ported here soon I think and I've read about these angle jobs and wasn't for sure what it was or what the benifits were,,I guess I'll see about getting the works done on my head I guess...that sounded funny didn't it....the works on my head... :D

Chad, you probably are getting a 5 angle. For the past several years, 3 angle was the greatest thing since sliced bread (for engine builders). But here in the last year or two, high performance machine shops are grinding 5 angles. Like the change from strait angle to the 3 angle, the 5 angle is supposed to increase frow rate even better. On the 5 angle though, i would be a little hesitant unless you know for a fact the machine shop is race proven. There is not much room for error when trying to gring 5 angles in such a small space.

I would definately say TC Racing is race proven so hopefully I dont have to worry about anything he does!!!!!!

just about every piece of motorized equipment with an overhead valve engine comes with a "3 angle" valve job now....

You have a 45 that does the sealing with the valve.. then there is (usually) a 60 degree and a 30 degree.. It's used as much to control where the valve seals, and the width of the sealing surface as anything..

If any shop did a valve job on my 400 w/ a straight 45 I'd be more than a little upset...

I've got an excellent book here that goes into properly setting up the angles.. It's actually a snap as long as you have the correct stones.. :)

I'll see if I can find the book later and scan the picture, it's fairly starightforward once you get a look at it.

That would be great Leo,,,the pic texan put in gives me an idea but I'm still a little stumped,,,so Leo would you get a 3 angle job done or leave it the way it is???

do the 3/ 5 angle

It should already have a 3 angle valve job, straight from the factory :D

I'm sure that there is probably some room for a very slight improvement (there always is) but it might be one of those cases where the $$ spent is signifigantly more than the hp gained..

I still can't find the darn book, I'll poke around some more tommorow and see if I can find it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure you will, but the 400ex already has a 3 angle valve job. Even the shop manual shows the 3 angles, 30, 45, and 60, and how wide the 45 portion is supposed to be before its out of specifications.

Looked to me like it had the 3 angle when I lapped the valves last.
