How long do polished parts stay "polished"?

I polished a few things on my ol' 400ex when I had it and it turned out fabulous, but the shine didnt last long at all. Is there something I could put on it to make it last? Clearcoat paint???

use some mothers polish to get the shine out again,and then after that throw like two coats of clearcoat on it
