Hey guys,
I was just over at 450r central and one of are members made this post. Just wondering if you have heard anything about this ?
From bigcubes at 450********

OK fellas if you didn’t buy your extended warranty, and it isn’t too late I would go do it. Why? Well I am going to tell ya.

My buddies bought his 05 three days after me, about two months ago. We were riding last weekend and after we were done we washed the bikes up. He started his up and it had sounded like there was a bolt rattling around in the case, bouncing off the crank and case. He took it to the Honda dealership where he bought it, dropped it off. He called an inside friend in the service depot to find out the scoop.........Here is the scoop.

They called Honda and told them what it was doing. Honda replied O yea we know about that, there is a silent recall for that, do not tell the customer. Take the head off and see if the crank moves back and forth. They did, and it did. So bad it was whacking the case, both sides. Next step is to split the case on a bike that has 10hrs on it. Turns out the crank is trashed, bearings and a rod. I think we are going to show up there tomorrow unexpected with a camera.

I think Honda is holding there breath hoping that people will run out of warranty before this takes place. That is why they are not telling anyone. I hope I don’t have a 7000.00 pile-0-shat.

i have a friend who has already replaced the crank in his 450 honda done it. the bike was less than a month old. he said he went out one morning and kicked it over and heard the knocking sound. so he shut it off and it never started again. honda did replace the crank though.

i wonder if this is just a bad lot of cranks or whats going on ? Is there anyway to contact honda directly ?

i've had my 450R for about 2 months now and have well over 75 hours on it and i ride HARD! I have never heard a clank, bump, bruise, ping, or cling out of my motor.

oh yea...i already have the waranty and theft insurance.

Ive had my 450 since march with a 500 kit all year, no problems other than the kickstarter. The dealership I work at had an 05 come back in after 2 weeks of riding and the motor locked up. We took the kickstart apart and got the motor to turn over, and as soon as we got it running it locked up agian. Honda told us to take the motor out and they sent us an 04(which they said is the only one they had available at the time), we put it in a month ago and the guy has not had a complaint with it. Just makes you wonder?:ermm:

I won't be getting an 05 at the moment as my 04 is going fine!

11-13-2004, 07:03 AM
so the problems are starting early with them like the cannondales? like, has anyone had an engine lock up on them with alot of hours?

One_Bad_400
11-13-2004, 08:54 AM
why would the 04 engine be better than the 05, why would they make them crapyer and not tell us the recall

crazyriles
11-13-2004, 10:25 AM
sounds sort of like the dales the 02 was more reliable than the 03

11-13-2004, 10:35 AM
they may have found a cheaper manufacturer for bearings or something & thought they could get away with it...isnt that what happened with cannondales?

Actually now that you mention it... mine just a few weeks ago started to make a weird Clanking sound like that as well... i thought it was just oil not getting to the top end cause as soon as i hit the throttle it would stop.... ????

I have about 70 hrs on mine.......:huh

Is this a problem with the 05's, or both the 04's and 05's?

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 04:06 PM
i know dosent that suck. i liked the JRD 450 your buddy had. i wish i could of saw him rippin. you know they could of impounded all of our quads and gave us all 1000 dollar fines. the cop asked me (cause i was the 1st one he talked to) how many people were out there. i said, "man dude theres a whole bunch, like 30 people". his reply to his partner, "man thats alot of paperwork". dosent that just piss you off...

Hammer trx450r
11-14-2004, 04:53 PM
Well then I'm glad there were alot of people there. There was a whole train of guys going back as i was leaving. They said they were going somewhere else though.

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 05:05 PM
i was just on that website you told me about, a chit load of good info! alot was stuff i knew about already but in more detail and really reinforced it. so whats up for next weekend? you want to go to a track somewhere. the only problem is i dont have a truck but i would gladly pay for gas in turn for a ride or something. idk, just an idea. we'll see, oh btw, i love your quad man, really nice setup!

Hammer trx450r
11-14-2004, 05:09 PM
Unless we strap it to the top of my van we gotta problem. Another little problem is my clutch was slippin pretty bad so we'll have to see what the week brings

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 05:14 PM
yea i heard you sayin your clutch was slippin. lol, strap it to the top of your van, thats the greatest thing i've ever heard! i might be able to get my fathers ranger or borrow my buddys trailer, the we have room for 3 quads...one in the bed and 2 in the trailer. either way were gonna have to figure something out, only if you get that slippage taken care of:blah:

Hammer trx450r
11-14-2004, 05:17 PM
Oh it'll get taken care of don't worry, But im hearing about people tearing them down and finding other damage, And my install there was a small issue that will probably rear its ugly head when i tear down

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 06:02 PM
dude i think i really did something to my rib today  its getting progressively worse as the night goes on. i wish you would have seen me get ejected. i didnt want to flop on my chest so i put my head down to the side and let my helmet take the blow. probably not the smartest thing i could've done but everything was in slow motion. when i got home, i had all rocks and mud jammed in the bead on the outside of my tire. lol, when i washed it and then took it down the road to dry it, all this mud sprayed out of my tire. pretty funny.

450 Racer R
11-14-2004, 06:50 PM
I went out there at about 2 and didn't see anyone. There were some people riding but we didn't say anything... what time were you guys there? Hey dave, you should of just gave me a call and I would of came down there and said you could stay. Only problem is that you rode there and they could get you for being on the road.

Hammer trx450r

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 07:21 PM
john, i was thinking that at the time but all i could think about was my rib. thanks man for the support. i appreciate it. yea i was gonna call you in the morning, but then i left to go there, i met 4 guys out there and we were ridin non-stop. then hammer came and we were talking, then i crashed, then the cops came, it was around 2. i probably just missed you. we'll have to hook up next weekend and give something a shot.

450 Racer R
11-14-2004, 07:23 PM
nah, I was thinking about taking next weekend off. I'm not supposed to be riding and I don't wanna push it. I was thinking thanksgiving weekend. maybe that sat or sun

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 07:26 PM

ha good luck with the tear down. I'm thinking about MXing in the spring with my cousin. It felt good today. Didn't jump any, not yet. But I didn't lose anything. I busted a wheelie 1st-4th first try:eek2:

My 04 bike motor had a crank problem...found it when it was magnafluxed before being put together. Luckily we found it...it was severely out of balance and had a fracture of some kind. It would have grenaded under the load of the 500. That would have been way too much $$ :eek2: :ermm:

11-14-2004, 07:32 PM
man i hope this is jus certain people cuz i dont want honda to tear my bike all down to fix it...much less if i bore it and high comp piston it then it does it i will be pissed

Jersey450R
11-14-2004, 07:33 PM
yea man, you have them wheelies down! I wish i could ride em like that. i used to fall off the back of the blaster everytime i rode it so now i'm a little iffy, you know

Honda's are having issues. WOW!! Are all quads now junk or does each brand have it's own issues?? I swear 9 months ago I got the impression Honda was the God of quads and everybody swore up and down how reliable the 450r would be. Frames breaking, kick starters cracking cases, crank problems. They must of hired some Cannondale guys.. At least Cannondale made the quad fast and handle.. I own a POS, but I love the power and being different..:D

most of these problems are from rider error..if the kickstarter cracks your case you prob. gave it gas & deserve it

I have a ton of hours on my R mostly racing and Laz from Gt Thunder and I tore it down before the 12hrs of america to freshen it up and the top end was mint. My crank bearing did have some play 20-25 thou but you should replace around 40-45 thou.

Mine will be replaced soon>

Nice, telling someone they deserved to have their case crack.

Its called dummy proofing the basic controls. And kickstarting is pretty damned basic. If you have the case crack when you are kickstarting it then it is because of pos design, not user error.

hold in the gas pedal the next time you start up your car. Is it ok to give it gas while turning the key?

It’s fuel injected.

And if it’s older the carbs and engine is not the same as a NEW 450R

I would not worry about any think happening to your 450R they are a good quad, BUT yes in the massproduction of things there are going to be some mistakes and defects. I don’t know where the steel is made but a lot of foreign countries are known for junk and over graded steel!!!

And for the crank going out if the barrens are bad or put in wrong it motor will only last under 10 hours.

I worked for a GM and a Chrysler dealership. And let me tell you they recall tons of stuff every year. Billions of dollars of stuff. I've seen a new car blow up with like 2 miles on it and trans going out with like under 3000miles. And hundreds of neons with Blown head gaskets! and on and on (it was mostly Chrysler's)

This little petty stuff that the 450R has is not a problem!!!
And that’s that

I can tell you one thing, the bolts are POS... They snap very easy, even when using the torque setting in the service manual... I have broke 3 using the exact torque settings stated in the honda 450r service manual...

You might want to check your torque wrench.

And you might want to check this place out also.

[QUOTE]It says to torque them to 7 ft-lbs, i would go no further than 4 to 5 ft-lbs... My buddy was tightening the short bolt after we had already broke the lone one, he was using the smallest ratchet we have, using like 2 fingers and it broke... Also when reinstalling the cam holder look very close at the 4 bolts, 2 of them are just a little bit longer than the other 2, they go in the front of the cam holder....

This is the POS bolt guy, Thanks for the tip at the end
